Pardon my ignorance but what's the difference between a computer programmer and a software engineer in Canadian/NOC terms?

I am guessing that software engineers are also involved with the software's design rather than the raw coding, but then i know very few programmers who do not get involved with the design elements.

Personally I'd think software engineer and computer programmer are fairly synonymous and the software engineers are excluded from "2147 Computer engineers" because they fit into "2174 Computer programmers and interactive media developers"?

U are very correct, I made the same conclusion. They simply do not want software engineer to apply under the same category as computer engineer. If u are a software engineer, simply apply under computer programmer cos as as far as I am concerned both are more or less the same. Unless the Job description under computer programmer does not in anyway conform with ur responsibilities as software engineer which I doubt though.

Thanks guys, but how does one prove that he/she is a computer programmer and not software engineer? My employment letter says Software engineer. Can i still apply under 2174 category?

I believe when I went to see an immigration consultant on a trial consultancy period, around 1.5 years before we applied to come to Canada, I said that I was a software developer and he categorised that as "software engineer".

So I think computer programmers/software engineers should all be able to apply under 2174.

Any bets on how many hours it's going to take for that NOC to reach the 300 cap? :)

Aren't there many other professions such as Database, system managers etc. None of these seem to be included for 2013. Computer programmers is just one part of the IT industry

Have a look under the NOC description for 2174 and make sure your experience matches the lead statement and at least 50% of the duties.

Hi,

I need help from the experts. In year 2010, i applied as a Senior Java Programmer (under NOC 2174) and i was not considered by the Central Intake Office with the following reason:

"You have indicated that you have work experience in an occupation with the following NOC code: 2174- Senior Java Programmer. This occupation is not included on the list of eligible occupations specified in the instructions identified by the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism and published in the Canada Gazette on 28 November 2008."

My roles and responsibilities at work matches exactly as stated in NOC 2174.

  • Can anyone explain me the reason why my application was not selected in 2010?
  • Is Java programming not similar to computer programming?
  • Should i give a try again on the May 4th 2013 as computer programmer? Any chance of getting it through this time?
  • My work experience also matches with the Web Designer. Should i apply as a web designer for better chance of being accepted for processing this time?
  • What is the difference between Interactive Media Developer and Web Designer. I also have around 2-3 years of work experience as a Graphics designer and Animator?
  • Finally, What should i do this time?

Thanks in advance. Please help.

Regards, Jags

NOC 2174 was never part of the in-demand occupation lists of MI-1 (which was in effect when you applied back in 2010), MI-2 and MI-3. You're lucky that they will include it under MI-8 (starting May 4 2013). I'd say that, if your job descriptions match those of NOC 2174, you are eligible to apply. Make sure that your descriptions match what's written on the HRSDC website

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/QuickSearch.aspx?val65=2174

A lot of people were getting rejected due to job description mismatch, so keep this in mind when you make the request for reference letters.

Hi asbereth,

Million thanks to you. That's the exact answer to my question. I checked Ministerial Instruction 1 and i did not found 2174. It was very stupid of me to apply under that in 2010.

I have few more queries and i seek your help -

1. It is a big problem if i say that i am a Software Engineer (My designation - on my employment paper and salary slip) who is doing Java programming (My role) at work? Is this a valid NOC 2174?

2. Will it help (in terms of CAP limit) if i apply as a interactive media developer, i also have some work experience on this?

Please guide.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jags83,

You have to be a bit careful if you mention that your designation is Software Engineer, since it's got its own NOC number, and it is NOT NOC 2174. Software Engineer falls under NOC 2173, which is not part of the 24 occupations accepted for FSW1.

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/QuickSearch.aspx?val65=2173

You mentioned that you were a 'Java Programmer', so, in my opinion, definitely apply under this title rather than 'Software Engineer', since they will automatically make the connection to NOC 2173 (if you use 'Software Engineer'), which is not part of the 24 occupation list. Also, 'Java Programmer' is one of the possible designations for NOC 2174

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/ViewAllTitlesQuickSearch.aspx?val=2&val1=2174&val65=2174

Regarding being an 'Interactive Media Developer', it also comes under NOC 2174, so it will still be subject to the same cap (500) as any other designated titles accepted under NOC 2174. Remember, the 500 cap limit is applicable for each NOC number, regardless of designations.

Hi Asbereth,

Sir, I am new to this and was exploring about Canada PR. I am planning to apply for PR. I am from India. Can you please tell if iSeries System Engineer/AS400 Administrator/System i Administrator or Power System technology from IBM comes under 2174. I work as an system administrator in this midrange technology. It is similar to Mainframe but its called as Power System / Midrange Systems from IBM. I checked yesterday My score came as 77. Can you check and let me know about this technology. I am subject matter expert in this technology.

I have few more questions about Canada PR, but I will first check other questions if those are already asked.

Regards
Raj

Hi rajas400,

It will depend on your job descriptions I guess. Check them out against NOC 2174 and NOC 2147, and see if they match with those provided on the HRSDC website under these NOCs.

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/ViewAllTitlesQuickSearch.aspx?val=2&val1=2174&val65=2174

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/ViewAllTitlesQuickSearch.aspx?val=2&val1=2147&val65=2147

Also check all possible titles for these NOCs, and see if your job title falls under one of them. System Administrator probably falls more closely under NOC 2281 (which is not part of the 24-occupation list), but then again, it depends on what exactly your job descriptions are.

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/ViewAllTitles.aspx?val=2&val1=2281
