Hello

Could someone help me with a police certificate issue for Family Sponsorship?

The visa office in Ankara, Turkey where our application is now is asking for yet another valid police certificate. My husband, who is the applicant, was born in the U.K. and went to school there for just a couple years before high school. He has not lived there for many many years. He is now 45years old. He has been living in Turkey for over 20 years now.

The visa office has asked us for the 2nd time to send a police certificate. The last one we sent was valid from Turkey with a certified english translation. We followed all instructions correctly. We sent the last one upon their request on August 24th. 2017. The very first one we sent when we were first applying in Jan 2017.

Are they just asking for this again because the police certificate is only valid for a certain amount of time?
Or do we have to provide a police certificate for the country that he was born in?

He has also been visiting me and our son in Canada during this process, do we need a police certificate for Canada as well?

Hope someone can help soon! We've got to send this out asap.
Thanks

Pay attention to the specific wording of the request... typically, if they want additional police certificates or a police certificate from Canada, they will mention that specifically. Can you copy and paste what your letter says here?

The only requirement for the original submission of the police certificates is a) the country he currently lives in (if not Canada) and b) the country he has spent the majority of his life in since turning 18. However, sometimes they will reach out at a later date and ask for police certificates from other countries if he happened to live there for more than 6 months at any time. They do their own Canada police checks unless they specifically ask you to get the RCMP check in a letter at a later date.

The police certificates do not expire so that would not be an issue related to why they are requesting it again. I would be curious to the phrasing of the letter.

Thanks for sharing that. Did your husband ever live in the US? To me, it looks like they are specifically requesting a US police certificate "FBI Clearance: Please provide an updated FBI Clearance Certificate") as well as a UK police certificate ("Police Certificate: Please provide an updated Police Certificate for (NAME OF APPLICANT) from the United Kingdom.")

Oh!! Yes. He lived in Kentucky for University. He lived in the UK ...England before he was 18 years of age.

This must be it! Thank you so much for this. In the instructions for police certificates they never talk about what FBI clearance means. Or maybe I missed something.

Thanks

What if we can't get the police certificates from the US and UK within the 30 days?

Its christmas time and processing might take even longer!

Unfortunately the FBI certificate usually takes months. See the excerpt from your letter: "NOTE: PROCESSING TIMES ARE NORMALLY BETWEEN 16 AND 18 WEEKS. YOU SHOULD APPLY FOR YOUR FBI CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE IMMEDIATELY AND SEND THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE TO OUR OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE."

There is a thread on this forum that relates to the FBI processing times, you can check it out for a more up to date estimate.

Unfortunately it sounds like they may have requested these documents in August and are now sending this request again after not receiving the correct certificates (since you sent the Turkey one again and not these). Submit the request for the FBI clearance right away and send a letter of proof/receipt that you have applied for it... that way they at least will know that you are going to submit it. Besides that, there is not much else you can do.
