My wife and I are planning to move to Vancouver from San Jose, CA. I have been offered a job with CAD 100k base salary (plus benefits + 10% bonus + matching RRSP upto 5k etc).

I don't have much idea about Vancouver. We would like to live in a rented apartment (2 bedroom possibly). We have a car of our own which we'd like to keep. We eat out 1-2 times per week and like to travel/hike/camp a lot.

Could anybody give us any idea about the cost of living in Vancouver, and whether we'd be able to have a decent life with such income? Please feel free to point me to any old thread also, for more info.

Isn't there anybody from Vancouver who could reply? :(

Heard that house rent (may be around $2000/=pm for 2 bed room flat) is coslty in Vancouver. Monthly living expenses should be around $4000/= including rent. Weather wise it is better place to live in Canada. Those who are living in Vancouver can reply to this post.

It depends where you live in Vancouver, there are cities close to Vancouver like Burnaby, New West, Coquitlam that has cheaper rent, but try and look at craigslist and you will have an idea how much is the rent for 2BR in Vancouver and other cities.

Wellcome to VanCity, the most expensive city on the planet BUT beautiful too....You dont have to stay within the city, Langley, New West, Burnaby Delta are good on rent and the skytrain help as parking is terrible and expensive in down town Vancouver!

Thanks folks! So, with 100k-110k salary, how much would go away with taxes?

Also, how much is the car insurance (having a good driving history in US for 5 years )?

this is just my approximate calculation (15% for taxes and other deductions):

net pay if paid once every 2 weeks=100000/26*.85= $3,269.23

as for car insurance, you have to go to the insurance co. as it depends on the car, years, etc.
(range from $100-$300 per mo.)

Tax may be around 30% and Car insurance around $150/=pm.
