Hi everyone,

I’m planning a relocation from Canada to the UAE soon and I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth taking my car with me. I’ve been researching Car shipping From Canada to UAE, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually done it.

From what I understand, most vehicles are shipped by container shipping or RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) through major Canadian ports like Vancouver or Montreal. Transit time seems to be around 4–6 weeks depending on the shipping route and customs processing.

Things I’m trying to understand

For those who have shipped a vehicle to the UAE:

  • Was it worth shipping the car instead of selling it in Canada?
  • What was the total cost including freight, customs, and port charges?
  • How complicated was the customs clearance process in Dubai or other UAE ports?
  • Were there any vehicle compliance or inspection requirements?

Import rules in the UAE

Some information I found online says that when importing a vehicle into the UAE, the following may apply:

  • Around 5% customs duty
  • 5% VAT
  • Vehicle inspection and registration requirements
  • Port handling and documentation fees

Looking for recommendations

If anyone here has experience with Car shipping From Canada to UAE, I would really appreciate your advice on:

  • Reliable international shipping companies
  • Estimated shipping timelines
  • Any unexpected costs or paperwork issues

Relocating internationally already has a lot of moving parts, so hearing real experiences would really help me make a decision.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Why UAE? Most travellers are trying to leave there lately.

Unless you have a really unique car (special edition, vintage car, etc), I don’t think the hassle and cost is worth it to ship something like a Toyota Camry.

As far as I know, cars are relatively affordable over there, so selling in Canada and buying something comparable (or better) in the UAE is the move.

That said, I haven’t done it (which is what you asked) but for the reasons outlined above, I think you will struggle to find someone who has.

Yes ..but all problems will be normal in a few days
As someone who has a husband in the UAE, I wouldn't be so sure.

Sell the car. There are going to be a lot of second hand cars for sale there soon in any case.

Living in Dubai, I would lean towards selling in Canada. Cars here are noticeably cheaper than back in Canada, especially lightly used ones, and registration is a straightforward process. Unless the car is rare or has sentimental value, the duty plus VAT on top of shipping rarely makes an ordinary car worth the effort.

In the UAE, you may find newer-model cars at much cheaper prices than in Canada. Before shipping your vehicle, compare the cost of selling it in Canada and buying a newer one in the UAE, including import duties, VAT, and registration fees. It may be more economical to sell your car here and purchase one after relocating. Many people are leaving the UAE for other countries these days. What made you decide to move to the UAE? Just curious about your reasons and whether you think the UAE offers a better lifestyle and opportunities compared with Canada.

Good point, appwarez — that is exactly how it worked out for most people I know here. Once you add freight, duty, VAT and the local inspection and registration, the total is often close to what a similar car costs here, and you also avoid waiting weeks without a car. I would only ship a car if it has real sentimental value or is a model that is hard to find here. Otherwise, sell in Canada, settle in, and buy here once you know which area you will be living in.
