Oh jeez, what if I get to Service Canada Monday and she was totally wrong?

I should have called them a month ago in fairness but really I expected to get my new IEC visa and just rock out with that until my PR status went through

You should TOTALLY be reading this thread: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/on-the-lighter-side-paranoia-during-the-wait-t135768.0.html :D

I'm sorry, I did NOT mean to add to your worries! I said it as a joke. I've gotten different answers on the same question, but it was not about clear-cut policy. (My app is missing a police certificate - one rep said they'd send it back as incomplete, the other said I was fine and they would request the police certificate when they found it was missing.) I'm sure you're FINE!

Haha no you're perfectly fine making a joke (laughter is the best medicine) but you raise a good point, I'd hate to get to Service Canada high as a kite on this news and then be shot down like Bambi

That is a good point...managing expectations and not getting your hopes TOO high is usually a very good approach. I've been learning lessons about that for a while now. My husband is military. You NEVER know what's going to happen, for sure, until it's in the past. We lost $600 and a visit with my in-laws (it was to be my first time to meet them! got another chance six months later) at the last minute (less than a week before our flight) because of his career.

Good luck! Hopefully the representative was right, and you'll be back to work soon!

I really, really hope she was right. She seemed to know her stuff, didn't stutter when replying or hesitate at all. She asked me if I had applied for an Open Work Permit along with my inland app and I said yes and she said I could continue under the same employer.

I however do not know what to bring to Service Canada Monday other than my expired SIN, my marriage certificate and the details of my Inland App...

Bring the AOR email (Acknowledgement of receipt)

Yes I will definitely bring a copy of that email also!

Anything I can get my little paws on, I'd love to go back to work within two weeks if it's at all possible, that'd be ideal

I've had closed work permits too and even if the sin has expired it is still allowed to work on the same employer if you have a work permit application pending. I'm not sure if they will renew your sin because there should be an expiration date they might tell you to wait for the open work permit.

There is an exp date on my SIN, that's why I figured I could no longer work any more and my employers brought that up with me also.

So, if I go to my employers and explain what the CIC lady said to me, are they likely to accept that without the need for a SIN renewal?

It's a big corporation and one with the kind of reputation where they couldn't have me back unless they knew 100% it was OK to do so

Yes, I think that's the way to go, Even if you go to work permit forums they would tell you you are allowed to work with the same employer even if your SIN is expired as long as you are on implied status waiting for the other work permit application to complete. I have doubts if they will renew your sin without the open work permit as there would be an expiration date the same expiration date of the open work permit.

I think what I shall do is pay a visit to Service Canada/Ontario on Monday and get their opinion on it. Bring all my stuff just in case.

I'll see what they say on the matter - I totally see your point though, why renew my SIN now when nothing has formally progressed yet - and then bring it up with my employer.

The lady who hired me at my job (at a bank) is off for two weeks though - so I'm not sure how I'll reach her about discussing it if she's away. Perfect timing, lol

Yeah, I'm not sure what city you are in but in Calgary we have a CIC department (same building with service canada) where you can ask an officer face to face you just line up and you can ask them in their booths. They're very friendly and helpful maybe they can give you a better solution. I have a feeling the person at service canada will just tell you to wait for the open work permit before renewing sin.

I'm in Whitby, just outside of Toronto. I will see if my local Service Canada has anybody I could pop in and speak to!

Yup, best of luck and let us know what they say

Will do!

I really hope she was right...I am itching for it to be Monday now!
