Canadian citizen abroad sponsoring spouse – intent to return & finances

Hi everyone,

I’m a Canadian citizen currently outside Canada on a working holiday visa. During this time, I travelled to India and got married. I’m preparing an outland spousal sponsorship for my wife who is Indian citizen, who is residing outside Canada.

I do not currently have a job or property in Canada and my savings are modest, though I have past Canadian work history and have never received social assistance. I intend to return to Canada after completing my WHV.

My questions:

1. What evidence is typically sufficient to demonstrate intent to return to Canada when sponsoring from abroad?
2. Is a letter of explanation and accommodation support letter usually acceptable in this situation?
3. How much importance is placed on current savings, given there is no minimum income requirement for spousal sponsorship?

Any insight from members with similar experience would be appreciated.

1. Sorry. If you do plan to return, no such question would arise. If you want to make it up, then you need to be creative.

Thank you for getting back to me. My working holiday visa is valid for one year only, and I do not plan to apply for a second year. I am planning to return to Canada by the end of this year. My spouse is not living with me at the moment and is currently residing in India.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I do plan to return to Canada and will be fully honest and transparent in my application.

My only concern is finances, as I do not currently have significant savings, and I want to ensure I properly demonstrate that I do not intend to rely on government social assistance, particularly while sponsoring from outside Canada.

You got married and do not live or plan to live with your new wife for the coming year. Do you have long dating history with her before?
I would be more concern on the relationship proof.

It was an arranged marriage through mutual family friends. We did not have a long dating history. I spent about three months with her in India before leaving.

The issue is why the rush you were not planning on living in Canada for a year and you don’t seem to have enough savings for both of you to come to Canada and establish a life here. Would be slightly different if you already had a home and job in Canada. If is very rare to apply to sponsor your spouse if not living in Canada while your spouse is abroad or while not living abroad with your spouse.
