For you to be able to count your 5 years fellowship, you have to ask yourself below questions.
1. Was your work full time? (More than 30 hours/week) Not the time you put in research but officially on paper.
2. Was it paid?
3. Does your univ consider fellowship as employment?
4. Will your university give you a letter saying that you were full time employed with x salary and list all your roles and responsibilities?
5. Does your roles and responsibilities fall in either 0, A or B category NOC Code.

No, to any of the above may not qualify your to claim 5 years experience.

Brilliant Answer. Simply I would say, you cannot add your PhD as a full-time work experience.

Apparently there are many people who have used their PhD as work experience and got positive results under NOC 4012.

Not their Ph D - that is being a student. However, graduate students frequently are employed as teaching assistants or research assistants, in addition to their studies. That work experience, if it is outside of Canada, can count as "employment" if you can document it.

If you have a work permit during your PhD, then may be it can be counted. What you have mentioned in the link is RA experience, which is completely different from just PhD. So if you can get an experience letter, in accordance with CIC, stating a full-time experience then you may try.

I am an Indian citizen and completed my PhD in India itself. I wasn't RA As such

I received PPR today..... I request everyone to plz encourage anyone with a PhD and wfellowship who wishes to file their application. It is possible. Thanks a lot for all the help

Wow, big cong. I have the same experience as you. I spent 5 years at USA for PhD program, and each year I received W2 as paycheck, which is evidence that I'm employeed. I'm now asking my school to give reference letter that my RA experience count as work experiences.

Thanks for your inspiring story!
