Buying car with international driving license

Hi, I just wanted to add to this forum because I was looking through here before I arrived in Ontario, Canada and there was no answer related to this province. My experience has been that yes you can buy a car but you can't register it or insure it without an Ontario drivers license. I have an Australian drivers license and I have been driving for six years. When you go into the transport office, you need to show your valid license and also a license history and they can provide you with an Ontario drivers license. Important note, your license history must be an original copy. Also some staff will try to put you on a provisional license even though Australia's driving standards are on par and you have already gone through provisional licensing. If you stand your ground and prove you are eligible for open licensing you should be fine. Well I hope this helps someone out!

If you have one or more year experience license with the country where Canada has license exchange agreement (example US), you will be given G2. Driving abstract is optional but get it. If you have two years or more, you get G.

Without Ontario license you wont be able to get an insurance and the car registered.
