I live near Toronto so that's the airport I always fly out of. My husband lives in Santo Domingo and from Toronto there are no direct flights. I fly with Delta most of the time, and have to connect in NYC or Altanta. I flew direct once from Toronto to La Romana, and drove to Santo Domingo but it cost more, so as much as the connecting flights are annoying, it's the most convienient

Was it the flight that cost more or the cost of transportation afterwards? Just curious ? My husband lives in San Pedro which is closer to Sanyo Domingo. Personally I hate flying through the states so ill take my Toronto connection anytime. Hahaha

I find that the flight cost more when I flew direct to La Romana. I can usually find a good deal for connecting, usually around $500ish, depending on the time of year

Flight with west jet from Punta Cana go through Toronto and then connect to wherever else in Canada. Personally I fly with them and love it. Grant it I do have a 2 hour drive to Punta Cana but flying with west jet has been great! Sometimes on the return you have to rush through immigration to make connecting flights though. I've been okay with connections to both Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. However, if you are connecting to Calgary the connecting flight is really tight in time... Not sure where ya'll need to fly to.... Where are most folks from on here anyways? I'm in the northwestern ontario region.
I love WestJet! That's my airline of choice. I tried Canjet twice and both times were horrible. Never again, I'm in the east part of Toronto (Ajax).

Toronto here!
I always, always flew West Jet to visit my husband. I think I took Air Canada ONCE because I had a credit with them, and Air Transat for our wedding package because that's what our travel agent worked out for us. I just find West Jet has the best and most frequent schedule (to Puerto Plata anyways!) and the most reasonable prices.

I have heard from a few people that Air Canada won't allow Dominicans to fly from DR to Canada, on their very first time entering Canada. But WestJet allows them to.

For the ladies with husbands in Canada, did they fly with West Jet ot another airline?

That is really strange. I have not heard anything about that. I wonder how they could enforce such a discriminatory rule and if they enforce this on new residents from other countries as well?

My husband flew direct with West Jet when he came. We got him here for $217!

They must fly either West Jet or Air Canada their first flight over. It can't be a charter plane. If they fly an American airline they will have a stop over in the U.S., which they can't do u less they have a valid US visitor visa. So it limits it to Air Canada and West Jet, since the rest of the direct flights to and from Canada are charter airlines.

It's not discriminating, but because charter flights book two ways, the origin being Canada, so it is a big how to do to get a one way flight coming from Dr to Canada because it screws up their vacation packages and stuff.

My husband flew West Jet, but has since flown Sun Wing.

I meant it would be discriminating if Air Canada didn't allow Dominicans to travel direct to Canada on their airline for their first flight to Canada. I couldn't understand how west jet could allow it but not air canada? Maybe it's just for charter flights that Air Canada won't allow it?

Yeah maybe it was that Air Canada Rouge and they might consider that one a charter because it's supposed to be their "cheaper" plane.

Majority of the time West Jet is cheaper and their customer service and flight staff are usually far more pleasant than the Air Canada people. Any time I've flown with Air Canada there are numerous staff members that seem to hate their job and are miserable and in flight staff not friendly.

When my best friends husband came to Canada for the first time, he tried to book with Air Canada and they told him because it was his first time, he couldn't fly with them, so he had to fly with West Jet. This was a few years ago, but a few other Dominicans I know that are here have said the same thing about Air Canada!

I know a few Dominicans who flew to Canada when landing first time as PR on Air Canada, so who I knows!

I just know you can't fly charter first time so the only options directly into Canada are West Jet or Air Canada. I guess AC is hit and miss too! Don't give them your money!
