hi everybody,

this is my first post here and first of all, i´m so glad i found this forum before sending my application it has saved me from a lot of mistake.
i´m dominican living in canada for a year now came with a student-work visa and now i´m remaining as a visitor. i married my husband last september while i was still under a student visa and now we are almost ready to sent it, we are applying outland. and i got some questions, i´d like to know if somebody can help me.

how was your experience with the dominican visa office? how long does it really takes? i know on the website says 14 months but i heard some cases where it takes less, where you call for an interview?

if i can´t prove communication between me and my husband previous the marriage because i didn't have a phone until now, i used to have a work phone while i was working so i texted him through that phone, and he change his phone before we got married, should i write a letter with an explanation?

Hi Nreilly,

My husband is Dominican. I sponsored his as a PR OUTLAND through Santo Domingo in 2012. We were together 4.5 years before we were married and I sponsored him. We met March 2008 and had long distance relationship with visits until I moved to DR (Pto Pta) in August 2009. I lived there 3 years. We were married in July 2012, I moved back to Canada in August 2012 and sent in the application 1 week later.

The application was received by Mississauga August 23, 2012. I was approved as sponsor October 9, 2012. The application was sent and received in Santo Domingo October 26, 2012. My husband's PR was approved and passport request November 26, 2012. So in total from beginning to end it only took us 3 months 3 days.

Now ours was very quick and other people aren't quite so lucky. Most it seems are approved in 6-8 mo ths time. Some a little longer. Some have interviews, some don't. Usually those who are interviewed have a few red flags such as fast relationship, large age difference, very few days actually spent together. You living in Canada should make it fairly easy.

Did you guys meet and marry within the year that you have been in Canada? If so, to help prevent an interview, show proof that u have been living together. You can also have your family and friends and his family and friends write about your relationship and how they support it.

For our communication, we showed a handful of msn conversations and phone cards I used to call, which didn't even track the number called. We then showed rental receipts from Pto Pta and just said we lived together and communicated daily and in person. If you can just just write a short explanation about not having the phone communication and how you live in Canada and see him daily with a rental contract or whatever you have from where you live, you shouldn't have a problem.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask me here or in a private message! There is also a facebook group that has many people who are married to Dominicans (and the Dominican spouses too) who have gone through the process or are currently going through it! Let me know if you want to join the group. If not, like I said, ask me whatever you need to on here :)

Hey I am Canadian working on sponsoring my Dominican husband. We applied in March. We are hoping all our papers are in order. We worked on a large portion while I was down in Dominican, then I completed the rest once I arrived back in Canada. We are hoping that we didn't miss anything. I am more worried that the portion of the process done in Santo Domingo will take the longest. My husband is far more calmer than me, but then again he's Dominican as just generally more chill than me. I find it comforting to review this site as I realize there a tons of people in our position awaiting news. Anyway, just wanted to say hi.

Good luck 2world1love! It is a scary process but when it is over you will think that it wasn't so bad. My husband's PR was approved in 3 months. It was only in Santo Domingo for 1 month. So it was crazy fast and we weren't expecting that at all, so hopefully yours goes faster than expected as well :)

Haha yep. I cried when I got the email (we put me as the representative so I would get the mail). My parents were like, what's wrong?!? It wasnt expected at all! Although I did expect our process to be pretty simple since we were together 4.5 years before getting married and I lived in DR for 3 years prior to our getting married and had just moved back to Canada and submitted the papers.

I hope everyone has as smooth of a process as we did!
