My application was returned. I received it today. Just becasue I forgot to "date" the online residence calculator. Now I have to wait until MArch 2016 to apply. I'm heartbroken
Hey parj,
I am sorry for your application status. I am just curious that when they returned your application, does it come in regular mail or is it express post? Did they return all documents? Can you please elaborate a little further?
Thanks,

Did CIC get your correct email add? No right? You only found out that you got AoR using CIC Ecas website, that means you got AoR. Please call CIC to inform them of your correct email add.

By the way I still don't know what exactly AOR means to applicants.

Is it just a receipt that they received application and logged into their system?

Do they usually take a glance on application if all the required documents are enclosed?

Received AOR this morning.

App. Received 12th May in Sydney. AOR came from there also. I'm located in Montreal. I didn't/don't check eCas since it was unreliable in my case during PR
UPDATE:

Started Processing 9th July 2015 (if it matters, it showed up on eCas 11th July 2015)

Usually AOR means what it says: Acknowledgment of Receipt. Meaning, they hereby confirm the arrival of your application, and you have been entered in the system. Thats it, thats all.
No documents have been checked...nothing has been done.

When it changes in your Ecas into "Started Processing" that means your file has been opened and they "actually do start" working on it. So, if something is missing, this is the crucial moment (Document Checklist for example, or missing signatures, pictures, fees....etc.)

Anyways...Ecas is not to be trusted. Its just a "guide". They only update that if they have the time, or want to do it or whatever. People have had unchanged Ecas for months...and in my case..Ecas changed into "Completed" after 2 months having Permanent Residency already!

If you really want to know whats going in your file.. with your file, you need to order the CAIPS Notes, or possibly also known now as GCMS or even the much older FOSS, but i only know them as CAIPS-Notes at the time I applied. These notes contain EVERYTHING...what they wrote..what they've changed...if Meds work out...if the background check worked out and if they will send you a letter for whatever reason....even the name of the agent.

I don't think this is completely correct -- AOR means that your application has been received AND accepted for processing. It means that the critical documents are present, the correct signatures and dates are there, and that you are going to be either accepted or refused. Processing hasn't started yet but when it does, you application will not be refused if it's missing something, you'll be asked to submit that thing.

This is what I thought because I saw postings that some applicantions have been returned before AOR due to missing key information such as date and sign on application form or residence calculator.
