I am a new PR and applied online for my first SIN. I also did not have any proof of address since i just moved. I applied the first time and got a refusal letter mailed to me within 10 days.

I opened up a bank account but will not have access to the statements for at least a month for me to use them as address proof. I get a phone line and used the service agreement as a Proof of Address which had my name and address on it. As per the SIN office, this is an acceptable proof of address.

My second online application was submitted on 28th April and still haven't heard anything from them. I called them today and they told me that my application hasn't been processed yet and i need to call back after 20 business days from application submission for them to tell me anything about my application.

I was one of the first applicants in April; I had to wait almost a whole month for my SIN. At the same time, my wife got hers in less than three weeks. It seems to me you've done everything right, so just give it a bit more time.

Hi,

Hoping someone can provide some guidance for this situation:
I completed a soft landing as PR in March - before the borders closed - but didn't apply for SIN or open a bank account as the borders were closing and I didn't want to risk getting stuck in Canada and needed to get back to the US (where I currently reside). I am now thinking of applying for SIN online but they require proof of address and I don't have a Canadian address yet. I have the following questions:

1) Can I apply for SIN without a Canadian proof of address? I can provide US as proof of address and provide my friend's address as mailing address.
2) If I can provide a Canadian proof of address, does this have to be the same as the mailing address? As I can I ask them to send the SIN documents to a different address in Canada from the one I will provide as proof of address?
3) Are there any other workarounds?

Sorry if the post is a little confusing but grateful for any clarifications. Thank you in advance!

Your application will get rejected without a Canadian proof of address. The proof of address should have your printed name on it along with the complete address.

Got it! I guess that's as black and white as you can get. Thank you for the quick response. Appreciate it!

I applied for the SIN online. I just had to check the boxes for each supporting documents saying I have them in hand but I was never asked to upload a copy. Did I miss something?
Also, I have not receive any confirmation by email.

I think there is an ADD files tab to upload the documents as proof. Have you received your SIN without providing the documents? Otherwise your application might get rejected.

I guess I missed the tabs. Damn. My employer needs this number :-(
I would look into if there is a way of providing those documents through wbeforms etc and send asap. My situation is somewhat similar - I have a pending offer in Canada but my employer needs the SIN number so I am trying to initiate that process asap.

As a follow up question, how long would employers wait for you to provide the SIN number? Considering I can't apply for one without proof of address this might be an issue. Can I start working and then provide my SIN after a period of time? Or is it mandatory to have this information prior to commencing work?

Seems like there is no way to use webform for that purpose. Should I consider to apply for SIN again hoping it will supersede the previous attempt?

Normally, one can't work more than 3 days without providing a SIN.
My employer also needs the SIN for the payroll.
If you really need a proof of address, you might try to open a bank account only with TD and call them to send a bank statement even if it's empty. Could that work?

Haven't applied for SIN so not sure what the correct answer is but I am assuming you would have to wait for the first application to get rejected before you can submit a new application.

The thing with Bank Statements is you have to wait for a month for them to generate. So even if I open one today, I can't used them as proof of address for another month and then another 10 to 20 days before SIN application gets processed. My joining will be within a month so it's not ideal.

To be honest my employer backdated my employment to the day I arrived (May 15th) so that's quite a long time without a SIN. My impression is that it's tolerated. The only issue is for the payroll.

Got it. Obviously it's not an easy situation but there isn't much I can do while sitting in the US. I will continue looking for workarounds but thanks for the clarification.

That's my impression and experience so far. I have been there for 2 weeks, so not much insight ;-)
The only workaround that might be not too slow is to find a way to get a reply from the gov or anything affiliated by post mail.
Note that it can emanate from a foreign government (surprisingly).
