Hi there,

I’m looking for some clarification regarding Section 5.5, “Time Spent Outside Canada,” for a Canadian PR card renewal.

When a child spends time abroad with their parent, who is a Canadian citizen, together on vacation, which reason code should be recorded for the child?

Would it be:

B: You have been accompanying a Canadian citizen who is your spouse or common-law partner or, in the case of a child, your parent.

or:

Other – Vacation

Technically, the child is “accompanying” their Canadian citizen parent while on vacation. Would reason B therefore apply in this situation?

Thanks in advance for any clarification!

If you opt for option A, it could be helpful when calculating the Residency Obligation to maintain PR Status. If you are close to meeting the 730 day requirement to renew your card (status does not expire, only the card does), it might be the best option.

Option B days would not count, save for the date you left Canada and the day that you return, since they will both be counted as a full day in Canada.

Trying to count time on vacation may make your application complex and lead to longer processing time. If at all possible just wait until their hit the 730 days while in Canada.
