Hello,

I applied for the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) through the Masters Graduate Stream. My application had gone to a comprehensive background check in September 2024.

Today, on October 03, 2025, I have received a Procedural Fairness Letter with these exact words - "I have concerns regarding your ability to be economically established and contribute in your province of nomination. Specifically based on the documents reviewed, it appears that you rely on your parents in order to support yourself in the province of nomination. Furthermore, it appears that you have not entered the labour market in Canada after completing master’s in 2023/05. To date, there is insufficient documentation that you are employed and financially independent in the province of nomination."

I am currently working a part-time job and have the hiring email and pay stubs to prove it - I had already sent this information to IRCC via a webform - I was initially receiving money from my parents during my unemployment stage - I have also saved enough money, which was a requirement for the OINP Masters stream application.

I was given 7 days to provide evidence. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thank You

How long ago did you start the part time job? Have you stopped receiving money from your parents?

I would resend the evidence of your part time employment, including an employment letter and pay stubs. I would also provide a copy of your recent bank account statements showing the last time you received money from your parents (hopefully that was a while ago) and demonstrating that you have been self sufficient since then.

My parents still send me money

Thank You very much for the reply

I started this job around 5 months back before which i worked in a commission based job - I also had a remote job (outside Canada) before that which was more of a freelance to upskill myself - Also when I applied to OINP, no rule stated that I should have a job in Canada which is why I was highly confused with this - there was a minimum amount of money required which I have saved

I still receive money from my parents sometimes but would it be a huge issue ?? It is considered in Canada to be a gift ("Canada does not impose a gift tax on cash gifts to family members. You can give any amount of cash to a family member without worrying about a gift tax"), so there is nothing against the rules here - should I get a written letter from my parents that they don't expect the money back ??

One of the requirements of the program is that you have enough money to support yourself. If you are receiving money regularly from your parents, this would indicate you don't meet this requirement. It doesn't matter that the money is a gift and they don't expect it back. The issue is that you are supposed to be able to show that you can support yourself independently. IMO it's a problem that you are still receiving money from your parents. This was specifically called out as an issue by IRCC in the PFL.

Re-read the settlement fund requirements on the OINP site.

Would also be concerned about only working PT depending on the amount of hours you work and pay. Most PT employment wouldn’t be sufficient to cover your costs in Canada. You are applying for an economic immigration stream and so Canada wants to see that you will contribute to the economy and not be a burden.
