Has anyone tried updating citizenship after acquiring canadian citizenship? I called the NEXUS enrollment center recently and they said they cannot change that because the nexus program is currently closed.

I'm a NEXUS member and recently got this email:

Dear NEXUS Member,

We are pleased to inform you that NEXUS interviews will resume at enrolment centres in the United States (US) on April 19, 2022. Applicants wishing to schedule interviews can now do so at their nearest US enrolment centre through the Trusted Traveller Programs system. NEXUS enrolment centres in Canada continue to be closed.

My understanding is citizenship cannot be updated until Canadian centres re-open unless you book an appointment with a US Centre, but I'm not 100% sure they'll update Canadian documents.

I too received the same email.
I think that we can update the citizenship at both side, as its joint programme but as you said, we need to see if they allow people to walkin or get appointment just to update citizenship.

Thanks guys for the replies. I think I may have an answer. But will check with nearest Global entry enrollment center.

Can I add/change my citizenship through my TTP account?

No, you must go to a Trusted Traveler Enrollment Center (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST) if you need to change your citizenship or add a citizenship.
Note that if you are submitting an application for a Trusted Traveler Program, you will have an opportunity to update your citizenship during the online TTP application process. However, you will generally still need to go to an Enrollment Center to provide proof of your citizenship change

The last time when the center was closed in Detroit, I called them and they said no walkins but sent an email requesting a scanned copy of US visa to update in their system. That cannot be done for updating citizenships as per CBP officer.

Do u guyed recommend applying for nexus as a pr ? Can somebody share their experience many thanks
Your status in both countries dont matter(of course you should be legally entering both countries).
Other than that, all you need is the purpose to travel between 2 countries frequently to get the nexus card approved.
Eligibility: 3 years of residence in one/both countries during the last 3 years.

Yes, many commuters like me had only Canadian PR and US work visa.

Unfortunately my friend, you will have to visit Nexus enrollment center. I just renewed my Nexus membership and the system still took my old US Driver license with future expiry date and they even approved it. I called them and they asked me to visit and update. I visited Montreal Center in 2019 to update Canadian DL with both US & Canadian agents , still shows my old License :( I was told way back when Vancouver had a separate Nexus office(other than Airport) that sometimes the admin person forgets to update it with the back log.

Just as a side note since now you are in US, just be mindful while traveling, since there are several stories of US immigration dinging Canadian citizens with minor points.

I see you applied for Canadian citizenship, here is my 2 cents guessing you are not from a country which has a passport to enter US visa free. You would first need to get a B1/B2 Visa in case if you have a passport from any one of those countries. Mind you there is a long long wait to get any stamping done with US embassy.
Once your Nexus application is conditionally approved, you will have to interview with both US and Canadian immigration and if they approve you will get a Nexus membership , which is nothing but a risk free traveller status assigned to your ID. Again there is a huge huge backlog for Nexus both from US and Canada applicants.
There are background checks done from both sides of the border including RCMP database and you will also be doing biometrics with Canadian borders. You will be submitting the same 5 years history to both sides of the border. Every check is somehow linked to any application made in both countries :) :) It is not my intention in this forum to come up with ideas.

I will go to Global Entry enrollment center and see if they do it. All I need NEXUS now is to get Precheck. Only Canadian citizens and US members of Nexus are eligible for Precheck, not Canadian PRs.

ohh yes definitely get the TSA precheck. if you have time try calling the Canadian border and see what they have to say, sometimes you may get lucky and one is able to genuinely help.

I thought I’d update this thread with what I recently did to update my Nexus info with my Canadian citizenship.

I called the US border agency and asked if I needed an appointment to update my Nexus info. I was told no. So, I went to the Blaine, WA and just walked in. It took 10 minutes. I handed the US officer my Canadian Certificate of Citizenship, Canadian passport, and Nexus card. They updated the info and handed everything back to me. The officer said they tried to see if the Canadian officer could update their side of things for me, but that officer wasn’t available. I was given a business card with the phone number to the Canadian Processing center that handles BC and told to leave a detail message and someone will get back to me with instructions on how to have my info updated by Canada.

I tried calling the number several times, but the voicemail box was full. The last time I called, I stayed on the line and an automessage started to play mentioning extension numbers and how to access voicemail boxes over the phone. After all of that if said it would now connect me to an operator. Someone then actually picked up!

I explained that the US side updated my info and I was told to call this number to have Canada update in their side. The operator confirmed this was correct and proceed to ask if I wanted to fax or email my info. I chose email and was give a person to email copies of the certificate, passport, and Nexus card for the update. I was then told that I would receive an email confirming the update once it was done.

I emailed everything a day ago and am now just in wait mode. Hopefully, it will only take a few weeks.

It seems that Candian side enrollment centers are not yet opened, unlike US side. So possible delay.
