Ontario issued a record number of licenses for foreign doctors

Canada, 13th May: There has been a steady increase in the number of international doctors getting licenses in Ontario, states a report by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Ontario issues record high licenses-- The report by CPSO (College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario) the number of doctors getting licenses has gone up by around 20 percent since the last decade registering an increase of 3,988 physicians. And around one-third of the physicians granted licenses throughout Ontario are foreign doctors.

The Annual Registration Report by CPSO indicates that the number of licenses issue during 2010 were 3,708, which is more than the figures of 3,638 for the previous year. No wonder, this has led to an overall increased availability of doctors in Ontario, the report reveals.

Around 90 licenses were issued to doctors hailing from the US and 700 licenses were granted to physicians from other Canadian provinces, the report findings state. And out of the total doctors getting licenses from Ontario, around 37 percent happen to from Ontario itself while 41 percent are foreign trained physicians, the report maintains.

Factors behind increase in number of foreign physicians in Ontario--According to president of the CPSO, Dr. Lynne Thurling, several factors have contributed to the steady inflow of foreign medical graduates to work as doctors in Ontario.

These included programs and policies of the college, support of the government as well as other partners have together brought good results for Ontario, added Dr. Thurling, who works as a Psychiatrist in Fergus, Ontario.

In addition, factors like increasing residency positions and higher number of enrolments at various Canadian universities have led to an increased number of licenses issued to physicians this year. The current wave of higher number of doctors in Ontario are going to fill the shortage of physicians felt for quite some time now, Dr. Thurling stated adding that the process goes on with similar efforts from the government.

According to president of Canadian Medical Association, Dr. Jeffrey Turnbull, the changes are the result of informed and thoughtful decision for increasing the number of medical graduates from Canadian medical institutes and to allow maximum number of foreign doctors into Canada.

Job creation will now be the First priority for Harper.

Now it is expected that the Harper should concentrate on creating more jobs to bring down the unemployment rate of the country which is rising at an alarming rate.

Stephen Harper the Conservative leader has again gain the government under after the recent elections held early this month. He should again work with the same zeal as he did before and help the country from reviving from the recession and emerges as a healthy economy in future.

Throughout the world he is appreciated how well the Canada has moved up from the recession and reclaimed its losses in terms of the output and in the employment sector. Now he should carry working on the promises he has made during the election campaign by him. He should make it a priority to work for the fuller recovery and the growth of the country. The main emphasis by him should be now on the creation of jobs and bring down the unemployment rate of the Canada.

Soon statistics Canada will reveal the true figure regarding the unemployment rate prevailing in the country. Currently it has been found that in spite of increase in the numbers of jobs still the estimated unemployment rate is as high as approximately 7.6 to 7.7 per cent, which is an alarming figure.

Also recently the economists from Bank of Nova Scotia have forecasted that the unemployment rate may continue as around about 7.5 per cent even in the coming year 2012.

The economists are expecting the Statistics Canada reports might come out with a result showing a minor decrease of jobs in month of March and increase in jobs from around 15, 000 to 25,000 for the month April. But still the topic for worry remains that such high unemployment rate is not tolerable and seems to quiet challenging for the Conservatives to deal with.

According to the Toronto Dominion Bank economists report, they said going through the monthly scenario it is expected that three month pace of job building will slow down the jobs to only 13,000 as the 69,000 jobs created in January is out of calculation only.

The report further stated as this steady pace has already helped the labor market to recover the number of jobs which was lost during the recession and now it is going through bigger challenge of delivering jobs against the comparatively slower pace of the economic development.

It has also come to notice that unemployment among the youngster around the age group from 15 to 24 is as high as 14.4 per cent which is a factor of major worry for the country government

Alberta attracting foreign workers

Alberta is recently receiving a large share of Canada's immigration population which further turning a support for the province in the coming times.

The new immigration progress report states that it has been found that Alberta seems to be the favorite destination for the overseas workers who intend to land up in Canada. It also states that the immigrant’s number is increasing at higher rate as compared to the past scenario.

Statistics shows that as high of 1, 20,000 immigrants turned to the province during the last five years, the number rose from 20, 716 in the year 2006 to 32, 640 in the year 2010,out them around 85 per cent planned to settle down in the country only. The province got around 11.6 per cent of the total immigrants of the country as compared to 8.6 per cent in the year 2006.

The authorities are welcoming this scenario as they expect fill the future vacancies through the increasing immigration.

Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk states that, “It is good news that economy of province is growing and is expected to grow at similar pace, if the supply of workers continues.”

Lukaszuk further stated that as the province growth quiet flat the solution to this problem turns out to be bringing the temporary foreign workers during the boom years to fill the employment gap. But this also comes to him as a temporary solution to the permanent problem.

Now they are looking for the permanent solution that is attracting overseas workers to come, work and settle here and bring on their families. The authorities are trying to streamline the immigration rules and regulations for the prospective skilled overseas workers those who are brought in by the Canadian employers.

Fariborz Birjandian, the executive director of the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, states that Calgary is now mapping Alberta as a fulfilling destination for the immigrants who want to come up in the country to work here and get settled because it is the need of the hour as the province now is booming with the options of jobs as well as provision for settling down even.

He also added that Calgary has improved its reputation internationally from what it was in the past. Before the Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver was the attractive options for the aspiring immigrants. But now the times have, the past few years have brought a lot of change now Alberta has also become as one of the dream destination for the immigrants who are attracted by the Canada.

Alberta workers being allured by Australian companies

Canada, 16th May: A large number of Australian firms are hunting for qualified workers in engineering, oil and gas and mining sectors to work in Australia.

And its not uncommon to see hundreds of prospective workers queued up for getting an opportunity to work in available jobs in different sectors in Australia.

The fact that Australian companies are attracting qualified and experienced talent from Alberta is being considered a threat of brain-drain in this Canadian province. It may be worth mentioned that Alberta is already projected to fact shortage of 77,000 skilled workforce in the coming decade.

Hundreds throng Australian Recruitment Expo in Alberta—A large number of Albertans could be seen visiting the Australian Engineering, Mining, Gas and Oil Recruitment Expo carrying detailed resumes to impress their prospective Australian employers.

A craze to experience new things in life is what seems to be alluring Candace Plamondon to move to Australia from Fort McMurray and work there. Plamondon has an experience of four years as a power engineer.

Australian companies attracted by skill and education levels of Canadians—It’s the skills and higher education levels of Canadians that seems to be the factor driving a large number of Australian firms to Alberta and hunt for the required workforce. Canadians have great education as well as wonderful skills, admits Peter Rodda Clough, who states the need for additional number of workers to assist in Australia.

There is around 100 billion dollars worth work in Australia, he adds. A similar Australian job expo was organized in Calgary last week which was successful in attracting around 1600 aspiring workers for jobs in Australia.

Shortage of skilled workers in Alberta—Alberta is already facing a severe shortage of skilled workforce due to aging baby-boomers, stated Thomas Lukaszuk, Alberta Employment Minister. And to make things worse with regard to skilled workforce in Alberta, Australian firms are alluring people by saying that they can work during day time and go surfing at night.

However, Albertans need to know that even Alberta does have numerous entertainment opportunities for them. Rupert Merrick, Australian organizer, has, meanwhile, maintained that there is a dire shortage of skilled workforce in Australia due to booming energy sector.

Immigrants in Canada earn less, contribute less-Study

Canada, 19th May: Canadian immigrants earn lesser than their Canadian counterparts and as a result, their contribution to the Canadian economy is also less, findings of a latest study indicate.

The study conducted by the Fraser Institute named ‘Immigration and the Canadian Welfare State’ looked at the effects of immigration on Canada.

Immigration- a costly affair for Canada--The study criticized immigration policies of Canada since these were proving costly for the nation. The study showed that cost of immigration of around 250,000 immigrants into Canada each year is a whopping billion dollars to the nation each year and this is certainly a costly affair, the study cautioned.

The research included 844,476 people in Canada from the 2006 Census and studied their financial status.

Income and contribution of newcomers in Canada less than average Canadian--It revealed that new immigrants in Canada are earning less than native Canadians and are paying less tax than the average native Canadian. By newcomers in Canada, the study means those having immigrated to Canada in the last 18 years period.

The average earning of immigrants in Canada was stated to be around $10,000 less than the earning of an average Canadian. And their contribution towards income taxes was about $2,500 less than the native average Canadian, the study highlighted.

According to co-author of the study, Herbert Grubel, incomes of new immigrants in Canada are only 72 percent of the incomes earned by Canadians.

Similarly, such immigrants contribute just one-half of the income tax contributed by average Canadians. This is keeping in view the fact that the value of government and social services absorbed by immigrants and Canadians happens to be almost the same, the study author indicates.

Cost of new immigrants to the Canadian taxpayers comes out to be around $6,051.00 for each man, woman and kid, the report by Fraser Institute states. All this clearly reveals that new immigrants in Canada are a big financial burden on the Canadian taxpayers, adds Grubel.

Recommendations by the Fraser Institute report—

• Canada work visas should be made valid for a period of two years and might be renewed for another two years after seeing the proof of continued work or job.

• Canada temporary work visas should be issued to those having genuine offer of job in Canada with at least provincial median salary or wage.

• Holders of Canada visas losing their employment should either find a new work or leave Canada within three months unless their spouse has work with a family-work visa in Canada.

• Dependents and spouses of Canada work visa holders could come to Canada under Canada family-work visas allowing them to undertake work here.

• Canada work visa holders could get Canada permanent immigrant visas after having permanent job and staying in Canada for four years. and eligibility for applying for Canada citizenship after two years should be there for landed immigrants.

Canada needs to boost immigration levels

Canada, 18th May: Canada government must introduce necessary reforms in its immigration system to increase its annual immigration levels, asserts a former Director of Federal-Provincial Relations with Immigration Canada, Robert Vineberg.

Increase annual Canada immigration--Working currently as a senior fellow at the Canada West Foundation, Mr. Vineberg has maintained clearly that Canada must work immediately to increase the number of immigrants to be allowed into the nation each year.

He said that the reason why Canada needs to focus on increasing the annual intake of immigrants into the nation is due to stagnating rate of its domestic labor force along with low levels of population growth in the nation.

Political parties of Canada failed to address the vital issue for Canada—Mr. Vineberg, who has worked at several prominent positions with Canada immigration department (Immigration Canada) expressed serious concerns that one of the key issues concerning Canada has been left untouched by most of Canada’s political parties so far. He stated that many of these political parties were not able to state the number of immigrants needed by Canada each year although they have been calling for higher Canada immigration levels.

Canada needs an increase of 50,000 to 300,000 immigrants annually—Mr. Vineberg has come out clearly as to how much increase in immigration levels Canada actually needs to make each year. An increase of 50,000-300,000 in the annual Canada immigration intake would help in bringing the ratio to 0.87 percent once again, the same ratio as prevalent around 20 years ago.

And increasing the annual intake of Canada immigration by 100,000 to 350,000 each year would help in Canada realizing the target of one-percent-each year, he asserted. This will enable increased annual quota for immigrants in federal selected worker programs as well as provincial immigration programs and will also help in higher number of sponsored immigrants into Canada, thereby cutting long waiting periods.

He expressed his utter dismay at the fact that Canada immigration department-CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) has conveyed various Canadian provinces of its intent to allow the same number of provincial nominees into Canada as in the year 2009. He maintained that majority of Canadian provinces have been disappointed at this decision of the CIC.

Immigrants with professional degrees work at low paying jobs in Canada

Canada, 22nd May: Many foreigners having degrees in engineering, law and medicine work at low-paying jobs in Canada after immigrating here

At least, this is what the findings of a recent study indicate, contradicting the huge claims of the governments regarding helping immigrants in Canada realize their true potential in what is often termed as a ‘land of great opportunities’.

Dreams of immigrants shatter--Immigrants in Canada arrive with big dreams in their eyes. However, once in Canada, they realize, much to their awe and surprise, that the nation does not offer opportunities of jobs they are qualified for.

It is not uncommon to see many immigrants with foreign degrees including that of engineering, law and medicine not getting jobs for which they have been studying and trained for several years.

So, the question that often pops up in many minds is that if Canada really is land of opportunities or so to say, immigrants, then, why is an MBA cleaning office and a doctor seen working as a cab driver in Canada.

Where the fault actually lies? And what can be done to avoid such a scenario from getting repeated in the coming times?

A fraction of foreign educated immigrants in Canada work at regulated occupations--A Canada Statistics report highlights that out of the total immigrants coming to Canada every year, the percentage of immigrants with foreign degrees in Canada working in regulated jobs is said to be only 24 percent.

This means that after having worked quite hard for getting the required qualifications in their respective fields in their native nations, what they gain after coming to Canada is the compulsion to take-up low-paying jobs which are not in accordance with their qualifications and skills gained outside Canada. The report shows that the number of foreign trained doctors and nurses getting jobs in healthcare in Canada is stated to be around 56 percent. And for foreign trained teachers, engineers and lawyers, the percentage of 24, 19 and 12 reflects a big shame asking for vital steps to improve the situation

What steps can help to address this problem for immigrants in Canada—So, the issue is to chalk out a solution for easing the predicament of the immigrants’ woes with regard to the employment scenario in Canada. Recently, Canada immigration department-CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) has reiterated to introduce a new system for fast-tracking of foreign credentials in a bid to remove the barriers to jobs in Canada and for eliminating the problem of under-employment of immigrants in Canada.

The first batch of occupations to be covered under the fast-tracking of foreign credentials by 2011-end include accountants, pharmacists, medical lab technicians and occupational therapists. And the next batch will cover professionals like doctors, nurses, engineering technicians and teachers by 2012-end.

New Canada immigration law proposed by Canada government

Canada, 25th May: A new law aimed at curbing human smuggling in Canada has been proposed by Conservative Party of Canada.

The law is awaiting approval from the Parliament next month, stated Canadian immigration minister Jason Kenney.

Anti-human smuggling law to be reintroduced next month--The Conservative government of Canada, after winning the right to make a majority government in Canada, will not require opposition’s support for passing of new laws in the nation. Hence, the new law will, most likely, be reintroduced next month.

It may be noted that earlier this year, the proposed act for curbing human smuggling in Canada was scrapped due to elections on May 2.

The reintroduction of the anti-human smuggling law is aimed to control the recent surge in the number of human smuggling incidents involving a large number of undocumented immigrants to Canadian shores.

One such human smuggling incident of immigrants includes arrival of around 500 Sri Lankan migrants on a cargo off the BC(British Columbia) coast.

Anti-human smuggling law aims to facilitate immediate deportation--Main aim behind proposed reintroduction of the anti-human smuggling act is to facilitate immediate deportation of refugees staying in Canada without legal documents.

At present, it usually takes several years for deportation of undocumented refugees staying in Canada. However, the new act, when approved by Parliament next month, will reduce the deportation time to just few months.

Canada government feels committed to control human smuggling in Canada--Speaking about the issue in an interview, immigration minster Kenney said the nation feels committed to crack down on all those involved, either directly or indirectly, in human smuggling in Canada.

The issue is quite serious since those coming to Canada through undocumented means pay as much as ‘tens of thousands of dollars’ to criminal networks for gaining entry into Canada.

He maintained that out of the total claimants of asylum in Canada, around 60 percent are not legitimate for getting protection. He reiterated nation’s commitment to reintroduce a bill for controlling the number of human smuggling incidents in Canada. The new legislation, when approved, will give a strict deal to all those involved in such actions, he asserted.

Better quality of life makes Canada favorite immigration destination

Canada, 26th May: Canada has emerged as the second best nation in terms of quality of living it offers to the people.

No wonder, this has made Canada a hot immigration destination the world over. This has been revealed by the findings of a latest Better Life Index undertaken by the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development).

The survey took into consideration 11 different factors for measuring the quality of life as well as happiness of nationals.

Canada offers high quality of living, ranked 2nd—Canada has been ranked second for the best quality of life offered by the nation and is only behind Australia. As per the OECD findings, in terms of education, health, housing and life satisfaction in the survey, Canada has scored almost top ranking among a total of 34 major industrial nations in the world.

The US got a ranking of seventh while Sweden followed Canada by being placed at the third spot in the OECD survey. The OECD is a social and economic policy think-tank getting funds from its members and its ‘Better Life Index' survey aims to give a wider picture of a nation's success than just its GDP (gross domestic product).

Canada scores high in terms of education, safety--The OECD survey findings show that Canadians are regarded to be the best educated people among the 34 nations included in the survey. Moreover, the level of safety offered by Canada to the people is quite high.

Canadians said they feel safer while being on the streets even after dark as compared to those in majority of other nations. High safety levels of Canada are quite known considering the low crime-rate in many Canadian cities including Saskatoon.

Canadians a happy lot--Nearly 75 percent of Canadians said they were pretty happy with their lives and considered Canada a pretty good nation to live in. Canadians are much happier with their lives than the people living in other 33 nations included in the survey considering the fact that the average satisfaction level was just around 59 percent in the OECD survey.

The OECD stated that Canada performs quite well in terms of well-being and this makes it a top nation in several factors in the Better Life Index.
