We would like to retire to Canada. We have close friends living on Vancouver Island, have sufficient funds to be totally independent. Is this no longer possible?
As far as I am aware there has never been a retirement visa to Canada. Many retired people like ourselves have family there and the only route of access is for them to sponsor us since ,although financially independent, we do not have the kind of funds needed to apply under the investor class. the requirement is to invest $800,000 for 5 yrs, without interest ,in a government bond plus you would need further assets of $400,000. These figures increased fairly recently and there is also an annual limit on applications.
Many retired parents such as ourselves have waited 5 years or more for sponsored immigration applications to be decided (still waiting) and canadian immigration are currently looking to overhaul the immigration process once more .
