Well, I know that. I have been here for 14 months and no war. However, I would rather be in a country that has relatively NO CHANCE. This is just not safe, not in terms of war, but if you have indeed been to Korea, you would know that mopeds drive on the sidewalk, cars (taxis) drive like psychopaths, and old people push and shove people to get on and off buses and subways. When my wife was pregnant, she almost fell down an escalator (if you've been here, you would know they are like 20 meters long at a 45 degree angle) because some old woman was in a rush and literally shoved her. She was even pushed off an elevator by old people who demanded they go in first. Also, the number of times she has had to stand instead of sit because of some of these people, plus there is so many damn stairs here that strollers or walking around with a baby is just nuts. WAR? Not really the biggest problem with Korea right now. But being allowed to drink on the street and any time of day or night (I am referring to alcohol of course) and drunkenness being allowed by police? 35 degree weather? Ridiculous traffic, rude elderly (some but not all of course) and the small living spaces? I grew up in Canada my whole life. It is huge and open and free(dom) so I am now in the opposite situation, which I don't like. My main concern (why I have been able to stand it so far) is my son.
I lived in South Korea for a year, and I felt it was the one the safest countries I have ever been to. You have to worry more about how people treat your mixed culture child though. My friend lives there with his Korean wife and they have two chuildren. He gets a lot of comments and stuff because of his children. But honestly, I think it is a real stretch to call South Korea, unsafe.

Ya. India. One of the truly great democracies. With their record of human rights is second to none. That must explain why we get so few immigrants from there.
Very true, human life has absolutely but considering its history and cultural complexity, they have still done well to manage a population x 30+ times of Canada.

I wouldn't say that PRs affected by the strike who land in Vancouver only to face an airport strike are being welcomed to democracy. I think they are being welcomed to Harper's Canada, a leadership at war with living wages!

I get to go to Manila during the flood this week, then I'm flying back after labor day which is when the strike is 'probably' happening. Might be an interesting few weeks......

Though this is completely pointless to argue/debate about I'm going to say it anyway:

I beg to differ that India has done well to manage a population 30X that of Canada. 5000 years of history and this is all we have to show for it? (I'm born in India though brought up in another, first world country btw)

I'm assuming we're moving to/have moved to Canada because we think it's a better life. Let's start accepting our home country and work to be a part of the society that builds it and helps it prosper. Accept the good and work to improve the bad. Otherwise there're always other options.

Enough with the Canada vs whatever other country rigamrole. I think if people are not happy with the strike/government/cold weather they should rethink their options. Your options: vote for another party, take part in your community in Canada to help others or think about a timeshare in Florida for the winters. If your spouse is there and didn't want to move to your home country, boo hoo.

Only 60 years of independence though, not considering unwanted wars and border disputes. I agree with you, we chose to come here and its my/our country and it was only a discussion, not a comparison per se. I went back after 10 years and couldn't stand it for 1 week but its still the place I was born so you feel for it, hope it gets better

I've been born/brought up in India as well but spend good part of last 18 years in Europe/NA

P.S - Congrats on getting visa, I guess the anxiety, wait and patient would be over now. Quite fortunate, good luck

..but already voted for other party, perhaps try and campaign this time. My Iranian immigrant friend loves the conservatives, said that they will straighten Canada out
IMO - Harper is amongst the last George Bush style leader left

The problem is the Left vote was split. The Conservatives squeaked a win by on that.

That and LOTS of fraudulent election activity.
