Hi folks,

I got a question. My wife is PR since May 2006, however shortly after she got her PR we have moved overseas due to my work assignment and are currently out of Canada. I'm Canadian citizen, so as our child.

Apart from a couple of short trips back we've been staying overseas since Dec 2006, this means that there is no way that my wife can complete residency obligation. On the other hand, I've heard that the rule may be more flexible if she accompanies a Canadian citizen abroad. I'm not working for government and my company is not Canadian. Would this rule apply to us in this case?

Thanks a lot!
Val

Your wife PR is safe as long as she is accompanying you (Canadian citizen) while living outside Canada.

I should remember this but I don't. Does it matter whether the Canadian is a citizen by birth or by naturalization?

No, it never matters if a Canadian citizen is one by birth or by naturalization. Only matters if you are a Canadian citizen by parentage born outside Canada and have a baby outside Canada, then the baby will not inherit your citizenship and you would have to sponsor it for PR instead.
