While waiting for decision, which Work Permit to apply for?

is there a specific work permit I need to apply for while working and waiting on my PR decision.

My closed work permit will expire in Jan 2020, if by then nothing has been decided, what is the time line when to apply for the next work permit.

Would also appreciate a link, if you have one.
