I will be landing in Toronto next week and its gonna be pretty darn cold.

Any suggestions for a place to buy cheap but good winter coats/jackets and sweaters?

Thanks!

My 2 satoshi: Buy cloths which comes with temperature rating, otherwise you will be always be trying out.. good brands are Canada goose, Mackage, Moose knuckles, etc. they are not cheap. It's an investment in long run.

As a new immigrant as finances might be tight, do not buy the cheapest available winter jackets. Buy a good branded one (read reviews online) as it is an investment for the next couple of years and always remember to layer up (regular clothing + sweaters + any additional layer depending on the weather) and not just rely on the winter jacket

And do not forget to add some good shoes/boots to cope with the snow/slush. Plus hat and gloves given if going to get frostbite the ears and hands are the places to keep covered. As above maybe hard but not going too cheap will be a good investment.

No need to invest in a very expensive jacket if it is not in your budget. You can get a very good quality jacket for much less. You are only in Toronto not in Winnipeg or other much colder cities. Don't go for the cheapest jacket and make sure it goes down closer to you knees. A jacket to your waist won't keep you very warm. Places like a sports store or Eddie Bauer are some good resources. Mark's work warehouse may also have good options. Even when going to work most look functional not stylish. Warm boots are also important. Brands like Sorel offers good quality boots or winter hiking boot styles. The important thing is to add layers and also wear a hat, gloves and scarf. You don't need any special kind of layers except if wanting to do outdoor activities you may want to invest in thermal underwear especially tight pants.

Aren’t Canada goose too expensive, like $600 for a jacket.

But many people afford and wear Canada Goose! Check out the streets.
A good jacket costs around $1,500 in Canada goose. Well! At the moment, I can’t afford. What’re alternate options, not too cheap but reasonable price and good, durable stuff. Moreover, do you think, normal clothes, plus sweater and one winter jacket with hat and gloves will work?
