Hello, my parents submitted their visitor visa application from outside Canada last year and so far, we have received no fruitful response other than in progress generic emails. I've reached out to MP, however, they haven't responded yet. What should be done in this scenario? Should I ask them to withdraw and re-apply ? Should i reach out to a lawyer, would that be effective? Any insights would be helpful. Thank you

My parents hold Indian citizenship and my dad worked before in defence. Ircc asked for additional document one month after they applied and so far we have not received any communication other than generic emails.
The concerning issue is how do we know if the file is actually looked upon or just sitting in queue?

If he worked in defence then could take years. IRCC has to wait for India to send the information so IRCC will not move forward until that time. Honestly nothing much you can do but ask MP for status report. Did background or eligibility start?

Everything is complete on the tracker except for BG. It has been in progress for almost 12 months. If I don’t get an MP response and from what I see online, this specific MP doesn’t respond much , I’m worried about how to push the application or get transparency on what’s happening with their file.

You could file a letter of demand before writ of manadmus. This way you will get a response and if IRCC hasn't completed its review then a refusal. At least they get a response.

Pretty early for mandamus. If no response after another 12-24 months something to consider.

As others have pointed out your father’s history in defences means background processing is likely to take years. Reaching out to your MP will have no impact. After a few years you can try to push for a response by filing mandamus. The only other option would be for your mother to try to visit on her own. She would have to withdraw her application and apply on her own.
