Hello everybody
I am new to this Forum and this is my first post
I read some info about Canada visas and immigration and refugee, I intend to apply for a postgraduate study in Canada, I am Iraqi resident in Egypt, and my residence will expire in less than 7 months. What r my chances for my visa to get accepted after i get accepted in the university? and a second question, can I apply for refugee claim when I get there ? or when I finish my study ?

thank you very much.

Hi,

Because of Iraq's current political and economical situation and your position in your current country of residence, your chances are really weak in my opinion to obtain a study permit until you have a really good profile and have good funds etc. Ties with country is going to be an issue for you.

About the refugee status, I don't think so you can apply for that. Otherwise everybody from Iraq or Afghanistan could be a refugee in Canada. Well I guess if you prove that your life under threat on a personal scale, then maybe yes. But I really don't know about it.

I would suggest you to look up for Australia and Newzealand as well.

I don't know what you mean with my residence in Egypt. Do you mean that my residence will expire so that I will not get a visa? isn't 6 months enough for residence?
by the way, I did get a visa for uk before, it was a student visa, will this make any use ???

Yes, of course if you got a UK study visa and you studied your course and didn't overstay in the UK. It's a really positive impact. Secondly, what is resident status in Egypt?

To be approved for a student visa, you must show strong ties to your country of residence and prove you have no plans to remain in Canada long term. You cannot show strong ties to Egypt since you only have temporary residence there. It will be difficult to show strong ties to Iraq since you're not currently living there.

thanks for your reply.
About my residence in Egypt, it is a student residence and valid for less than 6 months and I won't be able to renew it since I finished my study in Egypt. So after that I don't have a country to go except my country, isn't that suppose to be a tie to my country ?

If you apply from Iraq, you have property there and have your whole family there. Plus, your previous qualification is good and the course you are going in matches your previous qualification and the university is good. Also if your previous travel history is good e.g. when you went to UK to study, you didn't over stay and completed your course. And you have proof of funds available for your studies in Canada. Then you have better chances.

So these procedures are done only because Canada don't accept someone to claim refugee there ?

No - this isn't a tie to your country. If anything, this is evidence that you have low ties to your home country and might be someone who is thinking of coming to Canada for more than just the duration of a student visa.

Ties to your country are things such as property ownership, other assets, rental agreements, school enrollment, business ownership, proof of employment, immediate family left behind (i.e. spouse and children), etc.

Greetings,
I want to know about the chances I have to get a visa to Canada for postgraduate study.
I'm Iraqi , holding a Bachelors degree from Iraq and living in Iraq.
Thank you in advance and looking forward to hearing back from you

You'll need to provide more information. What did you study as an undergraduate and which exact program do you plan to take in Canada (and which school)? What marks did you achieve? Do you have any work experience? If so, what kind? Have you traveled to countries previously requiring visas (e.g. US, UK, Europe)? What ties to your home country do you plan to demonstrate to prove you have no plans to remain in Canada long term?
