I found this in one of the forums and it offers good tips preparing yourself or your partner for Viasa Interview.

How to win interview with visa officer

MORNING OF INTERVIEW

1. wake up early in morning date of interview
2. take shower with cold water this opens your eyes and alerts you
3. shave properly. do not leave beard or facial hair
4. comb your hair nice (get a hair cut before the interview date)
5. brush your teeth good with Colgate.
6. wear good clothes suite and tie looks very professional
7. wear black shoes make sure they shiny polished
8. wear black socks and black belt

AT THE EMBASSY

1. arrive at the embassy outside lineup 45 to 60 minutes before the interview
2. do not talk to people around in line they will only confuse you more
3. believe in yourself and be confident
4. do not think about negative things. stay positive

MEETING WITH VISA OFFICER

1. greet visa officer with big smile
2. shake hand with him if possible. not very hard do not crush visa officer
3. ask visa officer how are you today?
4. when visa officer tells you to take a seat then you sit down
5. look straight in visa officer eyes
6. do not look around left right up down
7. talk to him with nice voice. not to low not to high
8. talk with confidence
9. sit up straight
10. ask visa officer kindly to repeat question again if you do not understand first time

IN THE END

1. say thank you to visa officer
2. give visa officer big smile
3. shake hand with visa officer if possible
4. tell him it was nice to meet with you
5. push your chair back in its original place

NOT TO DO

1. do not chew gum in interview
2. do not stand up at any point during interview
3. do not chew your nails or bite your fingers
4. do not cross your legs sitting down
5. do not answer a question if you do not have an answer
6. do not answer a question you don't understand meaning (your first language not English/French)
7. do not pretend you know all answers
8. do not keep nudging your head even when you don't even know what visa officer is saying
9. do not move a lot
10. never say WHAT? say politely, pardon me sir or madame
11. do not tell visa officer he/she has no right to ask this type of question
12. do not yell at visa officer
13. do not sound aggressive

We all come from many different cultures and societies. each culture has different teachings and doings. if you follow the points above you will be guaranteed successful or at least leave a very good remark and impress the visa officer.

Dear sponsors, please give this guide to your spouses who are soon to be interviewed. they should be prepared any time for interview.

Best of Luck!

Yes! Keep the good news coming!! We're 7 months in and figure we have another 10+ months to go brut can't help but get my hopes up when I hear there are exceptions to the 17 month quote...and yes, I know it's just an estimation!
Our timeline is close, 20 days difference! Did they request any additional documents? Where is your spouse from?

Well, I meant in ECAS, but I sent them an e-mail too late. Today they finally replied that they updated my address, but the one in ECAS is still wrong. I talked to an agent in call centre, and they said it's the best to include cover letter with my passport including my Canadian address and intention to stay in Canada for more than the next three months, and it's all gonna be OK.

Yesterday I sent my passport to Ottawa, so we shall see what happens :D Hopefully they will return the passport here to Canada. (no tracking in the system yet though, Canada post is slow in updating that :S)

I will update here when I receive my passport back. I am still happy, since total processing for me was about 9 months :D

BTW, did anyone land through Peace Arch (Vancouver) crossing recently? I will do it with administrative refusal (don't have a USA visa), so I wanna know do they make any problems in this case?
I landed at the Alberta-Montana border south of Calgary by flagpoling. I didn't enter the USA either and withdrew my application to enter. No problem at all

Not yet, we haven't heard a word from them really. I emailed them last week to confirm they received our application (for some reason Missasagua sent it to Ottawa at first then forwarded it to Vienna upon enquiry) and got a response that they got it in July and that it's in a queue. We've had to update to our ECAS in ages, not even to "in progress" it's been stuck on "application received" since July.

My husband is from the Netherlands, you?

Can't help but feel a bit jealous as well! I know we haven't waited a year yet but I wish they'd start processing Dutch applications as fast as the German ones!!

My husband is 100% Dutch on both sides of his family but was born abroad (in the middle east during the late 70's) and has worked a lot abroad over the last 15 years. Any chance that could hold up our application? I imagine if it was the case they'd be requesting additional documents.

The silence is the killer part!

Maybe they arent as fast on Dutch applications as they are on German ones, but I feel like its still faster than most other applicants. I got a decision made in less than 9 months and it would have been 8 if my police certificate wasn't expired. Though I know, waiting is hard! You could always decide to request notes to see if they have started working on your application yet. Good luck!

Don't worry, your ECAS will stay at "application received" until they ask for your passport/additional documents/interview.

To give you an example, my ECAS said "application received" until November 20th (from March), and I received a passport request on November 19th. So, my ECAS changed on 20th to "In process", says they STARTED processing it on Nov 18th.
