Scenario
  • My current PR card is valid until early next year.
  • I plan to apply for a PR card renewal soon.
  • I also plan to travel overseas using my current valid PR card.

What happens if my new PR card is issued while I am still overseas and in possession of my current valid PR card?

Does the issuance of the new PR card automatically invalidate the current one? If so, at what point does the current card become invalid — for example, when I receive the approval notification email, when the new physical card is mailed out, when it is delivered, or at some other point?

Cheers

Both cards remain valid for a specific period, with the old one being invalidated after (I believe) 60 days after the date of issuance (it's in a regulation that is on the web, don't have the reference handy). Meaning, the card can be used to board a plane. My spouse had this for a while - was questioned at secondary before we even knew that the knew one had been issued, the officer informed the new card had been mailed (after a few questions).

I presume that after 60 days (or whatever the exact period is) the PR card will be cancelled in such a way that it cannot be used to board a plane, even though it appears to be facially valid.

If you are still abroad, you'll either have to get the new one sent to you or apply for a PRTD abroad.
