Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to read this in advance.

I'm a Canadian and living in the US (green card holder) and my husband is an American-born citizen. We are now living in the US and I have had my green card for about a year. We have started the my husband's Outland application for PR. Now that we have decided to move back to Canada, can I still keep my green card? I have heard you can go through a process where you are allowed to get it back within 2 years but I don't know details. If you can defer, can it be done every 2 years or just the initial 2 years? I'm not sure if I want to give it back because we don't know our distant future plans especially since my husband and future kids will be dual citizens.

Has anyone gone through a similar process with green cards? If so, I would really appreciate your help.
Thanks again!

It's scary how similar our situations are. My husband is a Canadian citizen. We got married June 2015 and he got his green card February 2016. We plan to move to Canada this Autumn, but I've been thinking about what we'd have to do in regards to his PR status in the US. I'm not sure if we'll ever move back, but I definitely want that to be an option. How do you know if you have conditional residency?

If you got married in June 2015 and obtained the green card in Feb 2016, it is most likely conditional as you need to be married at least for 2 years to apply for a "permanent" green card. Have you applied for Canadian PR yet or when are you planning to apply? If you can wait until Feb 2018 (2 years anniversary of the conditional green card) to get the conditions removed, that would be ideal. I just started looking into this myself.

Is the site just having issues or does this mean something is going on with my application?

It worked fine for me a minute ago. You might have just made a mistake when going in. Try again and see what happens. Good luck!

No mistake, I've tried it again with mine and then my SO's information and the same thing happened...

I have two questions... what do they send the CoPR in for USA applicants who don't send a physical passport? We sent a return envelope in our PPR package but it is not express post and is a standard Canada Post prepaid return envelope (my address is within Canada) so I am wondering if this will affect anything seeing as there isn't a passport to mail back. We also only had black printer ink to print the passport copy and I am wondering if they accept black and white for the passport copy as it didn't seem to specify.

According to the "Ready for Visa" generic email, US applicants don't send their passports, just copies. Black and white is fine.

The only issue you might have is that the email clearly said to send a non addressed prepaid XpressPost envelope to send your CoPR back in. Your CoPR might take longer to return via regular mail than someone that used Canada Post XpressPost. Unless you paid for some kind of tracking, you won't see when it was sent to you or it's expected delivery date.

It just crossed my mind that they used to just mail the COPR with regular mail at their expense. With the advent of the PPR for US citizens, now they have us suck up the cost of the COPR mail, too. :P
