Hi Guys,

Just want to share my experience... I landed in Toronto, Canada last September 8th, 2015) and before landing, I got two job offers as an IT professional; one from the biggest bank in Canada and one in the biggest pension company which are both in downtown Toronto. Both interviewed me via skype and I got their offer on the same day around August. The key thing that led me to a job (choosing the latter) is updating my linkedin profile several months before landing (as early as January 2015). This is what I've done:

- I connected myself to the different recruiters around Canada, may it be talent recruiter or direct HR's from the industry you are targeting... After doing that, let linkedin do the rest since it will suggest you all of the HR's from the same location (Canada), and just connect.
- Put in the header that you are looking for opportunity in CANADA and landing by XXX. Upload cover letter and resume. Explain in the cover letter that you are not in Canada yet but in case you can keep me in file, that would be great.

I haven't even started applying for any companies since I plan to do it after I land so that I can have more quality selections to choose from. I did not apply for the two big companies where I got offers but they contacted me sometime 4 months before I land and then I started to chat and present myself and my skills through emails. And the rest is history when they got openings, they informed me.

I think the key thing in job application is clear communication so that they will know the truth regarding your availability. And for Canadians, integrity is the most important soft skills.

Hi Guys, one of they key is changing your LOCATION in linkedin... BEcause linkedin will suggest automatically the people in the same industry and location as you (as well as the recruiters). Upon changing your location, put in your header that you are an IT professional looking for opportunity in Toronto for example... Plus, upload resume and cover letter to explain your situation so that they cannot perceive that you are deceiving your location.

Initially I search for recruiters in TD, CIBC, BMO, RBC since wayback home, I am in the industry of investment banking... After adding them, then linkedin mobile will suggest you to add more (with the same location and profession, which are HR's)... Imagine when you are following contacts in instagram, when you add Adele, it will suggest 3 more musicians, something like that... You just have to plan ahead guys, so that the recruiters can consider you in their 3-8 months pipeline...

Hey DBase,

Some great info from you there. I'm just 15 days away from boarding my flight to land at Pearson, I've already shortlisted the jobs I want to apply for on LinkedIn, I'm drafting my cover letter for each one.

Need a bit of a help, how did you design your linked profile suggesting that you are landing in Canada. Did you start mentioning that you are landing with a PR, then mention your skills, then end it saying that you are keen on working in a sector. I'm asking this as I've read and heard that being a specialist will land you less job interviews but with a higher conversion rate of turning those opportunities into offers.

or did you take a general approach expressing interest in opportunities that are presented to you.

Any pointers would be of great from a person like you. Cheers mate, you're really opening up the road for guys like me, loved the way it's going for you. All the best for the future. ;)

Hey do you have a linkedin profile? can you PM that to me? Put in your linked in header, "Landing in Toronto by 2016MMDD" (example), then include a cover letter explaining about this (attached). Somewhere in the introduction in linkedin, put a bullet point, "Granted with a Permanent Resident Visa" and put in the career objective in alignment with this, you are exploring opportunity in that particular Canadian city etc.
