I don't believe you can use your no-claims bonus in another country. It's unlikely it would be recognised, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
There are a few insurers who will take into account your driver's abstract from the UK, but they are few and far between. Otherwise you'll pay through the nose for around a year until you've got some Canadian driving experience. It's insane, but that's how it's done. If you google "UK driving experience in Canada" or something similar you should find a few threads.

My husband exchanged his UK license when he was over here as a visitor. They didn't ask any questions about his status. They just swapped his licence.

Well, something is happening in London. We went into process on 27 June, although that ECAS system didn't show it till today. Maybe one or two of them are skint and realise their time would be better spent working and getting paid.
That's awesome!! :)

If you're in the UK, usually about 3 to 5 days if your passport is already at the embassy. Anywhere else in Europe 5 to 8 days, depending on where... so soon!

Congrats - that's great to hear! :)

Nope, they only ask for the passport if you're non-visa exempt. Congratulations btw!! :)

We didn't get a no-claim bonus as such, but the 2 motor insurers we have used since moving have both given us a small discount for providing proof of safe driving - only about 7 or 8 percent I think, nothing huge like the UK companies give. I would looooove to drop 50%+ off our premiums!!!!
Good to know, thanks. That'll be great for my husband when he swaps his licence. Thankfully, my parents never took me off their Canadian policy as a named driver when I moved to the UK, so hopefully that will work in our favour too. It meant I could drive their car when we visited. I've now been insured in Canada for 19 years continuously (God, I'm old lol) We both have clean UK driving records, so that should help too. Anything to save a bit of money :)

Went and got my SIN number today. Nice and simple. Feel like I'm becoming a real person again!

I went to the bank to open an account too, but I can't do it until friday because there was no one there who could see me until the afternoon! I also have a cell phone again too. Feels weird!

The best thing though? I log into my ECAS now, and it says "Complete"

Feels awesome.

Ah ah! welcome back to the world of working etc.! for banks, most of them have offers for new immigrants. BMO has a one year free plan, not sure about the others, but it's worth shopping around a little!

it should go fast indeed! :) it's soon over - your wife should receive the COPR and that's the only thing she needs ( besides her passport of course) to land in Canada as a PR. If she's bringing things, she can fill out a B4 to import things without paying taxes.

I went for Scotiabank. Get me those SCENE card points for the movies! They're also pretty good for me going forward as they have good small business incentives that help us out when we're ready!
