Hey everyone,

So I got into canada just fine. Everything went well until I went to the immigration area. They did not change my status from common-law to married. They said that they could not do it there. It was really disappointing and now I am running into tons of problems because the application says common-law.

Is there a number to call the immigration office now that I am in Canada? I need to get this all figured out before i get my p.r. card.

The PR card is the same regardless of whether you are common law or married. Nowhere on the PR card does it indicate your marital status.

What kind of issues are you running into because your application says common law?

It's true that your status cannot be changed at the border. If you wanted to change this you would have had to have contacted your visa office to make this change ahead of your COPR being issued and ahead of landing.

His mother is having some trouble with her apartment. She says the common-law thing is gonna screw up everything with her documentation and things like that. I am not quite sure.

So there is nothing I can do now that I am in Canada to get it changed? I am gonna try calling them in hopes that it would help. I know I have to update my status either way.

Exactly what "ton of problems" are you having? The PR card doesn't show your marital status. Your PR status isn't affected by being married instead of common-law. You don't have to change your surname in Canada when you marry, unlike some countries.

How does this have anything to do with your own common-law or married status?? I'm completely confused by your post.

Whether you are married or common law has no impact on her rent. Something doesn't make sense and I don't think you're being given the full story. If she is living in subsidized housing and you have been living there for a year unreported - that's a different issue and most likely is a problem. But being married vs. common law won't solve this. In that case rules have already been broken.

I am not gonna worry much about this as his mom tends to be a little overzealous. I just wanted to see if I can do anything to relieve her stress haha. I only been here 5 days and im like O.O. XD! Everything is a little different here.
