Studying under 6mo course with Valid permit

on CIC site it says that no permit is needed if studying under 6mo.
BUT what if student gets a study permit for a certain college for 1year
Student drops out of college and takes a course that is for 6months and under.
Does student permit STAY valid?
Does student need to inform CIC?

If you drop out of college then the college has a duty to report the fact to IRCC leading to your study permit being cancelled/revoked.
