Hey everyone,
I’m in Canada and currently have two permits:
My question is:
If my study permit is refused and I lose my temporary resident status as a student, but my open work permit is still valid, can I legally continue working? Or does losing status automatically invalidate my work authorization even if the work permit document hasn’t expired?
I’ve read conflicting info:
Anyone here with official IRCC guidance or personal experience? Would love to hear from immigration lawyers or people who’ve been through this.
Thanks in advance!
I’m in Canada and currently have two permits:
- A study permit (recently refused, so I’ve lost my student status)
- An open work permit (not tied to my studies, issued under a different category)
My question is:
If my study permit is refused and I lose my temporary resident status as a student, but my open work permit is still valid, can I legally continue working? Or does losing status automatically invalidate my work authorization even if the work permit document hasn’t expired?
I’ve read conflicting info:
- Some say you must stop working immediately because you’re out of status.
- Others argue that if the work permit is independent of the study permit, you can keep working until it expires.
