Subject: Travel Outside Canada While Study Permit Extension Is in Process – Need Clarification

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in Canada on a valid study permit and TRV, both expiring at the end of July 2025. I’m actively enrolled and maintaining my status.

In mid-March 2025, I applied for a study permit extension, and it’s still under process. I’m planning to travel outside Canada from June 20 to July 13, 2025, and I’d really appreciate your insights on a few questions before finalizing my travel:

1. Can I re-enter Canada while my study permit extension is still in process, if I return around 15–17 days before my study permit and TRV expires? Will CBSA officers raise any issues or concerns in this situation?

2. If my study permit extension is approved while I’m outside Canada, is that okay? Will it affect my re-entry in any way, or is it fine to return with the approved permit and valid current TRV? even though I was not in Canada at the time of approval?

3. If my study permit extension is approved while I’m outside, can I apply for a new TRV from outside Canada, or does it have to be done from within Canada?

4. If I receive my new study permit while I’m outside Canada, can I still return using my current TRV, even though it was issued based on my old permit? Once I’m back, can I then apply for a new TRV?

5. If my study permit extension gets approved just a few days before I travel (e.g., around June 15), and I don’t have enough time to apply for a new TRV before leaving, is it okay to travel with my current TRV and apply for a new one after I return?

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance!

1. Yes, you can re-enter Canada while your study permit extension is still being processed, as long as you meet the requirements for entry (valid TRV, valid passport, etc.). Here's how it works:
  • Study Permit: You are in status as long as you applied for an extension before your current permit expires, which you have done. As a result, even though your extension is still under review, you’re legally allowed to remain in Canada while you wait for a decision.
  • TRV: You should still have a valid TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) for re-entry, which expires at the end of July 2025. You can enter Canada with a valid TRV, even if your extension is in process, as long as your TRV is not expired when you attempt to return.
As long as both your current study permit and TRV are valid when you re-enter, CBSA officers are unlikely to raise any concerns. Your study permit extension won't affect your re-entry, because the extension does not impact your legal status until the previous permit expires.

2. Yes, it’s perfectly fine for your study permit extension to be approved while you are outside Canada, and it will not affect your ability to re-enter. Here’s why:

  • New Study Permit Approval: Once your extension is approved, the new study permit is considered valid, and it will not affect your re-entry as long as you have a valid TRV at the time of entry.
  • TRV: If your TRV is valid, you can still use it to re-enter Canada, even if your study permit was extended while you were outside Canada. Your study permit extension does not need to be “active” at the time of re-entry for the TRV to be valid.
Bottom line: If your study permit extension is approved while you're outside, just return to Canada with your current TRV and new study permit (once you receive it). There should be no issues.

3. Yes, you can apply for a new TRV from outside Canada after your study permit extension is approved, and it does not have to be done from within Canada.

Here’s what you need to know:
  • You can apply for a TRV extension (new TRV) from outside Canada after your study permit extension is approved.
  • Your TRV can be processed at a Canadian visa office in the country you are visiting (or your home country). You will need to provide proof of your new study permit along with your application for a TRV.
Steps:
  • Submit your TRV application online or at a visa office in the country you are visiting.
  • Include documents such as your new study permit (once approved), proof of enrollment from your school, and proof of financial support if needed.
4. Yes, you can still use your current TRV to re-enter Canada, even though it was issued based on your old study permit. Here’s why:
  • TRV: The TRV is a separate document from your study permit. It is still valid as long as it is within its validity period (in your case, until the end of July 2025).
  • New Study Permit: Once your new study permit is approved, you can return to Canada using your current TRV and then apply for a new TRV from inside Canada (if needed) after you’re back.
5. Yes, it’s okay to travel with your current TRV as long as it remains valid at the time of re-entry. You do not need to have the new TRV in hand before leaving.

Here’s what you should consider:
  • If your current TRV is valid for re-entry and your study permit extension is approved before you leave, you can use your current TRV to return to Canada.
  • Once you’re back in Canada, if you need to apply for a new TRV, you can apply for it from within Canada. You don’t have to wait until after your trip.
