Hallo there, I need your advice on my case. Currently I am a masters student graduating in August. I have already been accepted for phd at the same University, starting in September. My current study permits is valid till the end of November. In September I plan to get married to my fiancee (not Canadian as well) and then she will apply for the open work permit. My question is, should I do the application for the study permit renewal before get married and saying in the application that I am single or should I wait till September and declare myself as married in the application. Will the latter case make the things easier for the working permit of my fiancee or no?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Have been through the same. For your study permit renewal/ extension, it will be cake walk; as long as your finance is fine. For your wife's SOWP, it will always be tricky. There are always a group of people who get rejected. You do not know where you belong to unless you try your luck. Two pieces of suggestions-
1. Is it possible for you to go back to your country, get married, then apply for study permit from outside Canada along with your wife's SOWP application. Based on my experience, that puts you in little better situation as you will not be forced to stay separated from your spouse (I did the other way and paying the price now!)
2. If your wife is eligible and interested in one of the programs in your university- postpone your marriage (if possible), bring her here as a student, then get married in Canada. It is easy, does not take more than $100 and very very helpful. If you are thinking of PR in the long run, this path will help you most. I wish somebody told me this before!!

Hope this helps. If you tell me which country you are from, I can give little more specific insight.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am from Greece. So you suggest to get married first and then renew my study permit in Canada as a married person, right? You think that this might help with the application of my fiancee or its irrelevant?

For her OWP application, nothing will help unless both of you together apply from outside Canada. If you are applying separately, it is irrelevant.
