Thought I'd start a thread for 2025 study permit extension applications. I graduated from my Master's in January, applied for a PGWP in February, and then rather surprisingly, received a PhD acceptance in May. I have now applied for a study permit extension within Canada. Applied on May 30th.

Current wait time: 234 Days

So you are applying for a new study permit because you graduated more than 90 days ago. Are you cancelling PGWP? It is processed from your home country because you don't have a valid study or work permit.

I discussed my case with my university's immigration advisor. They said my application would still be an extension within Canada even though the 90 days had passed. I did also have the option to apply for a new study permit from my home country, but that would require me to travel again once my permit was approved (plus it can apparently look off on an application if done incorrectly).

I still haven't withdrawn my PGWP application as of now, since I'm not sure what my status would be once I do. This is something I'll probably have to discuss with my advisor again.

Your study permit expired 90 days after program completion so you are applying for a new study permit. It is not an extension. You cannot restore status to student and extend your status. Read the link.

You have applied for a new study permit inside Canada but it will be processed from home country. Right now you are on implied status while you wait for PGWP approval.

If you want to keep studying, you must apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before it expires.

When do the 90 days begin?

The 90 days begin either

  • on the date you get the first notification from your school (such as an email, letter, transcript, etc.) that you completed your program or
  • when you get your degree, diploma or certificate.

Since I already submitted my application under the 'extension category' of the study permit, what do you mean happens now? Does my application get returned back to me? Do I have to reapply under a different category?

Would suggest speaking to a lawyer who will be able to give you the best advice vs the advisor.
