If your study permit expired a year ago, then it's too late to fix anything from within Canada. You'll need to leave Canada to fix your status. Once you are back in your home country, you'll have to apply for a new study permit. It may be quite challenging to get one approved given how long you have been here without authorization.

Unfortunately this also means you won't qualify for a Post Graduate Work Permit since at least some of your studies were completed without authorization. If you can get a new study permit, you may want to consider starting a new program so that you can qualify for a PGWP once you complete your new program.

I was going through some family problems and it took a toll on my mental health. Can I apply for a TRP explaining my situation and hope I get approved ? And your thoughts on flagpoling?

You can try a TRP but hard to say what your chances of success are given how long you've been here out of status and the fact you continued with your studies. A year is a long long time. Have you been working as well as studying? Very strongly recommend that you work with a good immigration lawyer to put the TRP application together. You'll need evidence to prove any claims you are making (i.e. hospitalization records, letters from doctors, etc.).

Flagpoling is a very bad idea. Never recommended when you are out of status. CBSA will almost certainly have a bad reaction to your situation.

I did continue with my studies but I did take semesters off given my mental health wasn’t good and I didn’t work at all during that time. Yes I do have my mental evaluation and letters

Hard say what your chances are. Again, strongly recommend you work with a lawyer if you're going to try for a TRP.
