Hi guys,

I will be graduating in August 2019 and my passport expires in March 2020. For a reason that remains a mystery to me, I was given a Study Permit with an expiry date of March 2019. Here is my problem... I am traveling home in December for a few weeks and will be back in early January. I could renew my passport as soon as I am back to Canada and then apply for an extension of my Study Permit, but I am worried with the time constraint (given my current permit is valid until March 2019).

I can't renew my permit too early because my school (Douglas College in BC) won't give students an enrolment letter more than 3 months before the permit expires. I was wondering if I could renew my passport, get an eTA visa, travel home, re-enter Canada with my current Study Permit and both new and old passport. Once back to Canada I would apply for the extension of my Study Permit. Would that work?

Or if you guys have other ideas I would love to hear them!

Thanks!

Help please

You are confusing between too many things.

First and foremost thing is that you need study permit extension from Mar 2019 till Aug 2019. Since, you plan to graduate in Aug 2019 and your passport is valid till Mar 2020 so there is no immediate need to renew passport (at least for study purpose).

Suppose you apply for study permit extension in Jan 2019 and receive it by Feb/Mar 2019 then you may start the process of getting your passport renewed in Mar/Apr 2019.

Make sure before you go to your home country that you have valid visa to re-enter Canada. Don't confuse this visa with study permit. You can get this visa extended till current valid study permit i.e. Mar 2019.

Good luck !

Thank you for the response!

Just to clarify: I know there is no immediate need to renew my passport right now. But if I wanted to do so (simply because I have enough time to do it, and during the next semester it will be harder as I have a busy routine), would I be able to travel home at the end of the year for a couple weeks and come back to Canada using both old and new passports? My Study Permit and TRV Visa were both issued under the old one.

Or the Study Permit becomes invalid after I renew the passport?

Thank you!!

You can travel with both passports. Passports can also be renewed while in Canada through your embassy, also some countries will not renew a passport until it has less than a year left on it, so check first.
