Hi,

I am a Canadian permanent resident and have been living in Canada for seven years. Last year, I got married. I worked up until 2023, but I haven’t been working since then.

I’m considering applying to college with OSAP assistance and submitting a spousal sponsorship application for my wife. I can show $20,000 in my bank account. Will this pose any issues with getting my application approved?

Thank you.

For spousal sponsorship, there isn't a specific income requirement, but you must prove that you can financially support your spouse and prevent them from relying on social assistance. Given your savings and previous work history, this should not be a problem. However, it's important to show that you have stable financial support. The approval of your spousal sponsorship application will depend on various factors, including the authenticity of your relationship, completeness of your application, and adherence to all requirements. If everything is in order, your chances of approval are good.

Would personally show either show that you are working full-time or studying full-time to show you are working towards improving your chances of well paying employment in the future. If you are not working or studying and just living off of savings your funds will likely decrease over time and one emergency could really impact your amount of savings.
