Spousal sponsorship - Some clarifications needed

I am a present PR Cardholder whose card will expire in May 2019. My wife and son, who are also PR cardholders, have been staying close to 2 years in Canada. Once they complete 2 years, they will seek renewal of PR cards and will continue to stay in Canada.

I am thinking of making an application under the spousal category thru which my wife can sponsor me since, at this stage, I would not be complying with the residency requirements of 730 days under the present PR card.
We have also recently purchased a property under the joint names of myself and my wife. Moreover, my wife and son are not gainfully employed and I support them with funds from my place of stay where I am currently employed.

Given this background, I am interested in response to the following and would appreciate your preliminary response which will enable me to consider engaging your services:

• Can I apply for spousal sponsorship while the present PR card is valid ?
• If I can apply as above, can I travel to and from Canada before May 2019, being the date of expiry of the present PR Card ?

I would appreciate detailed feedback and help from members which will enable me to take suitable correct decisions and comply with the requisite regulations.

No - you can't. You have to formally renounce your PR status before your wife can submit an application to sponsor you.

No, you cannot. PR card expiration doesn't mean you lost your PR status. As Scylla said you had to formally renounce your PR status, then you can apply Vistor VISA and/or being sponsored by your wife.

Just a friendly reminder because you mentioned that you support your wife and child while in Canada but haven't mentioned paying taxes. Because of your family and your home you are responsible for filing Canadian taxes on your international income. Even if when you renounce your PR your wife must declare your family international income.
