Hey all,

I live in Canada as PR since March 2013 and am planning to sponsor my wife from Saudi Arabia. We got married on December 30, 2015. As filing up the sponsorship application, I came across some requirements and I need some clarification about it.

1. I am planning to go to Saudi Arabia after I apply for a visit, and as soon as the process is complete and hopefully approved, her and I will be coming together. I know am supposed to reside in Canada till the process is finished and her PR visa is printed. According to what I just described I have these questions:

a) Am I allowed for a short trip while the application is in process, if yes, how long should the trip be?

b) If I can't travel at all, can I wait till she gets her PR visa printed and go spend some time with her and her family for about a month or two and then come back together. If yes, how long till her visa expires, keeping in mind that her medical check is valid for only one year?

c) If we have enough time regarding her PR visa expiry date, which is good, what would happen if the medical check up expires during my stay over there with her? Can she just do another medical check up or how would it work?

2. To proof that our marriage is true, we are required to provide telephone bills showing that we have been contacting each other, same with emails. We've never used our mobile phones to contact each other(as it is very expensive) nor emails unless sharing documents for PR and sponsorship applications. However, we've always kept in touch on a daily basis through chatting apps such as whats app, Telegram, Facebook, BBM messenger, and about two to three times per week we used apps such as Tango, Viber previously, Line etc. as a mean of contacting each other for video and voice calls. We also used prepaid phone cards very rarely because we have constant data on our phones that we didn't need to use prepaid phone cards much. Will that be enough of a proof? And will the immigration accept it?

3. I have been working as a Lab Technician in Centennial College since January 2015, which is less than a year if I was to apply for sponsorship right now. That being said, regarding question no. 3 on IMM5481 Sponsorship Evaluation Form, does it imply that I would need to work for at least 12 months before sponsoring my wife?

Thanks in advance

1. Yes you can have short trips as long as its clear you continue to reside in Canada i.e. its the centre of your day to day life. There isn't a set number of acceptable visit days set by CIC but its obvious to you and CIC if you are visiting or living in KSA versus living in Canada. I'd suggest keep your visits to say 3 weeks say every 6 months at most.

2. See 1 above you can visit but keep it short and not regular/ multiple visits. Once the PR visa is issued then its easier to spend a longer stretch in KSA but again you need to meet the 'residing' in Canada aspect until she is landed so ideally land as close to issue date as possible. You can always return to KSA post landing without having to worry about this (if your personal situation allows it). She has to land within the validity of the PR visa which is linked to the validity of her medical. The visa will have an expiry date - she best land on or before this. Its usually a bad idea to land at the last minute...bad weather, strikes etc. can derail a last visa date arrival.

3. Its a bad idea to let your medicals expire..while it may seem a simple solution just to re-do them your other background checks could expire and need to be redone. There may be other situations too that could develop and derail the application e.g if say by misfortune there is a legal issues with the police etc which could affect eligibility.

4. CIC are aware of couples using the apps/ technologies you refer to but not having personal type emails may be something they dig into. I suggest you head over to the Family Sponsorship section of the forum where there is a ton of advice on this as well as the sponsorship process. That section will definitely be more useful to you than this one which is more related to preserving PR status once acquired.

5. In regards to income you can sponsor subject not to being on welfare so don't sweat this just fill it out with your wok details.

p/s You mean you got married in Dec 2014 right...and this was after you landed right?
