What do you mean by 14 weeks processing?

Actually, we're moving to BC. I've thought about Alberta many times, but prefer to be as close to the mountains as possible without making the wife feel like she's actually in a mountain town. I have skier blood I desperately wish to pass on to my boy (and now future child).

In BC we can apply for a Medical Service Plan which she can get (I sponsor her) as a permanent resident in waiting. Only draw back is a 3 month wait time from the day I declare residency in BC. So we're planning to have the little one in BC. The first three months in BC will be a bit scary though. I'll have to find additional medical insurance or something.

Ummm you know that Calgary is only an hour away from 4 ski hills, two of which are world class.

I understand that you want to be close to your favorite ski hill. I just wanted to point out that your post was misleading by giving the impression that Alberta is not close to any ski hills.

Cheers!

Alberta has both opportunity and ski hills :) Another skier here!

We may be off to Alberta yet. Lot's of jobs there. I've applied for at least 6 in the area already. I kind of like Lethbridge.

The 14 month thing is the processing time for the perm res visa in Manila...or so I read on their site.

I posted two links for shipping. The Hyundai one is actually pretty pricey but they specialize in international moving. They pack everything and ship door to door. From what I've read it's really reliable. Hanjin shipping on the other hand is much cheaper but you'll have to arrange packing and pick up. But I hear they are very reliable (or at least so my sources say...and they ship a lot of stuff).

Sorry, wasn't trying to be misleading. I just like living among the mountains where you can literally hike up a mountain in your backyard and ski down it. I'm a prairie boy though, from the flattest part of Canada, so I mean no disrespect to AB.

Finally got my option C, well my parents got it, they will be forwarding it to me.

No AOR yet. 2 1/2 weeks now.

Most people don't get an AOR so don't worry about that. It is the sponsorship approval that is the one to watch for.

Little update on the drivers license/insurance issue that may be helpful to those returning to Canada from Korea. Last week we went to the DMV to get our Korean drivers licenses changed over to Ontario. The clerk said that before she could do that, we needed to take our Korean licenses to the Korean Consulate and have them "vaildated". So, we took them to the Korean consulate in Toronto and they provided us with a document which translated the information on the license into English and indicated the length of time we had been licensed in Korea. We took that back to the DMV and they issued Ontario licenses for my wife and I.

So yesterday I bought a used car and needed to get some car insurance. You may recall my post from last month where I said I had contacted some insurers who all said that my rates would be ridiculously high because I had no recent Ontario driving history. It seems that was incorrect. The first insurance agent I visited punched my license number into her computer and it showed continuous driving in Ontario since I first got my license back in high school. Same for my wife. It showed her as having driven in Ontario since she got her license in Korea years ago, even though she's never lived here. I told the agent that we had been living in Korea for the past 12 years and she said that she thought that under the arrangments between Korea and Ontario, drivers are credited with their foreign driving record once the embassy validates that record. As a result my insurance was dirt cheap. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

Rented a house yesterday and will be moving in next week. Got a house and a car, once I get a job and CIS approves my wife's PR, we'll be all set. ;)

Good update!

I posted awhile back concerning getting a Korean insurance history document. Did you get that? Wasn't required?

I didn't get it because the insurance companies I spoke with before I left all told me they didn't care how long I had driven in Korea. I'm not sure you really need it because when the consulate "validates" your license here, they include in the validation document, the dates you were driving there. When you take that to the DMV they record it in the Canadian database, so you get credit for the time you drove in Korea.

Alberta: How to get drivers license. They have Recipricol Agreements with various countries. Korea is one of those.
