Hello Everyone,

I've been looking around and have seen some helpful tips so I decided to register for some advice. I want to bring my aunt from Guatemala as our live in nanny, for a lack of a better term. My wife and I want someone to look after our kids while we are at work, before during and after school (not all the kids go to school yet).

My question(s) to everyone is.

Should I sponsor my aunt, which includes a job as a live-in nanny or should my mom sponsor her sister with a job offer from me?- Does it matter to Canada Immigration which way I do?

Does it matter that there's a job involved?- with sponsorship, should one be included?

I can only imagine that it is easier for my mom to prove that she's her sister than she is my aunt.

I just started to look into this so any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers.

What province do you and your mom live in? It's unlikely that either of you can sponsor your aunt through the family class sponsorship program.

Does your aunt meet the requirements for a live-in caregiver work visa? That's probably her best bet for getting to Canada:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/caregiver/apply-who.asp

Specifically she must have:

- At least six months’ training or at least one year of full-time paid work experience as a caregiver or in a related field or occupation (including six months with one employer) in the past three years
- Good knowledge of English or French

We both live in Ontario.

The care-giver program is where I started but those requirement do not help her.

Is there a sponsorship program that would be better? At the moment, the program seems to be for spouses and parents.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately neither you nor your mother qualify to sponsor your aunt.

You're right in understanding that family class immigration programs are aimed at spouses (and dependents/children). Parent and grandparend sponsorship has actually been halted for the next couple of years - so even that program is no longer available.

If your mother had no other relatives (i.e. no husband, no children, no living parents, etc.) - then she would qualify to sponsor your aunt through family class. But she obviously has at least you - so this isn't an option.

The live-in caregiver route is really the best option for your aunt IMO. Alternatively she would have to try to qualify to immigrate independently as a skilled worker.
