Should I send the passport by mail, or just a photo copy ?

I just received that email from the visa office :

Dear Madam/Sir,
This refers to your application for permanent residence submitted at this office.
Please note that in order to complete the processing of your application, you are requested to provide us with the first page (biodata page) of your current valid passport which will be used for your travel to Canada.
Failure to provide the requested documentation within 5 days from the date of this email will result in your application being assessed on the basis of the documentation presently on file. Please be advised that, as the documentation requested in this email is relevant to the final assessment of your file, failure to provide it will likely result in the refusal of your application.
Please return a copy of this message with the requested documents.

Why not try both? You have limited time, so both would give you a better chance of meeting the deadline.

**For future reference : They responded to my inquiry on email. And they specified that they want a photocopy to be sent by email
