Dear All

I have a intra company transfer to Toronto. Though from India, I am living now in UAE.

My company is providing a relocation shipping.Should I ship my washing machine, TV etc to Toronto from UAE or it is better to buy these in Toronto ?

I read something about electrical power rating being different in Canada with UAE/India.

Can someone please advise.

Thanks

The public power supply in Canada is 110 Volts, 60 Hz. If your equipment does not explicitly state that it will work at 110 Volts, leave it behind.

Alternatively, you can bring a converter (I know it's really heavy!) to convert it to 110V.

I would suggest you leave electronics behind...get them here...
If you take an apartment on rent, laundry will be onsite...if you take up basement, again laundry will be included.

Instead, if you are getting shipment from company, get your furniture, mattress, sofa etc as they are very costly here...

No, you are wrong. You should travel and shop around more often. :D

On the other hand, I wish I brought more small Asian crap with me, like LED flashlights, mobile chargers, portable luggage weigh scales, blank CD's/DVD's, gel pens, USB drives, car lighter USB adapters, etc. Although I can find these crap here, they are a lot more expensive compared to when buying in, well, Asia!! Not to mention there are more quality Asian crap in Asia than here in Canada. I bought a $2 car USB charger in Dollarama and it absolutely sucks compared to my $1 car USB charger from Asia.

As for TV's and other larger electronics, buy them here and get them shipped to your apartment.

You can also check with your company if they agree to give you relocation amount Lump sum in Cash. Companies in UAE are very much willing to do as managing shipment and taking care of equipment & contract required them to hire extra staff/ cost.

Dear Friends

Thank you all for your inputs.

The company will arange(at their expense) for 100 kg goods by air, 10,000 kg by sea and pay $10K in cash to me.

Now the choice I have is which items to take and which ones to be sold/given away in UAE.

In my opinion, take the $10K from company and travel light.
In this money, you can setup a complete house in Canada with top of the line equipment.

Wouldn't bother with white wares (such as washing machines dryers, ovens) or TVs for that matter. You can buy 220-110v converters, but they will be heavy and large (as washing machines for one uses high wattage, might not be safe either) Buy that in Canada, its also fun to shop for electronics, at least i think so.

Computers, shavers, toothbrushes all work both ways, remember to flip that switch on the back of your PC to 110v before turning it on though. The only time i would bother with a voltage converter (not adapter) is if i had a expensive color laser printer for example, or a Playstation or something like that that is worth almost nothing used, but expensive new....
