I would really appreciate any insight or feedback on my situation:

I have been in Canada for 7 years now. First as a student and after graduation from a Canadian university/now working on a post graduate work permit expiring in 2012.

I applied under FSW2 on October 22nd, got my PER on February 16th and my E-cas status reads received by visa office.

Well, I just got accepted into grad school, in the same city where I currently live in Canada, to start my Masters degree in September. This would mean that I have to apply for a study permit. So I have a few questions:

1) Can I keep my PGWP and get a study permit at the same time?
2) Will getting a study permit and starting grad school in September have an impact on my PR application? I applied under FSW2 with arranged employment from my current employer.

My visa office is Buffalo, which is apparently notorious for longer processing times. If my PR case is not finalized by September, what are my options?

PLEASE give me your feedback!

Much appreciated.

Hi Mahek,

Here are your answers:

1) Can I keep my PGWP and get a study permit at the same time?

No, you will have to surrender your PGWP and get a change of status to a Student (Study-Permit). This can be done with a simple application to Vegreville, Alberta.

2) Will getting a study permit and starting grad school in September have an impact on my PR application? I applied under FSW2 with arranged employment from my current employer.

Not at all. Dual intention is allowed in Canadian Immigration. I know many friends, who have renewed their WP while their PR is in process.

3) My visa office is Buffalo, which is apparently notorious for longer processing times. If my PR case is not finalized by September, what are my options?

Unless you wish to extend your Study Permit further, you really do not have much options other than returning to your country. PR in CHC Buffalo is getting finalized in about 11 months (After receiving complete papers). If you are past that time, you may send in an email inquiry. The link is:

https://dmp-portal.cic.gc.ca/cicemail/intro-eng.aspx?mission=buffalo

OR you may send them a general query at buffalo-im-enquiry@international.gc.ca

Hope this helps.

Hello bsrk68,

Thanks for your response. I think you might have misunderstood my situation. I am in Canada working full time on a PGWP now. I applied for immigration last October under FSW2-- arranged employment for those currently in Canada. If I switch to a study permit before my case is finalized in Buffalo I am risking ineligibility since I was eligible because of my arranged employment letter.

I called CIC and they said I can hold a study permit and a PGWP at the same time.

However, my only option if I want to accept the grad school offer and start masters in September would be to apply under CEC once I complete one year of full time employment (in July).
