Hi all,

My wife used to be under TRV status with a study permit, to file taxes for her, I helped her apply for an ITN (International Tax Number) to file her tuition credits and later we used the ITN to apply for child benefits after we had our first child.

Now that she received PR status and her permanent SIN card has arrived. I suppose we have to update/notify CRA about her new SIN (permanent) instead of continue using her old ITN.

We are wondering if anyone has similar experience and can share us some experiences.

Our questions are:

(1) Did you mail proofs of your PR status, scan of your new SIN card, and a note/letter cross-reference to which tax account you're updating in regards to your child benefits? (I believe we mail information to the Sudbury tax centre for the Child and Family Benefits since we are residing in Toronto).

(2) For her old ITN account, I suppose we have to mail similar supporting proofs to the Ottawa address of International Tax Centre, to close her old ITN account? Do we need to notify them to close it or merge with her new SIN?

(3) Will the careover-tuition credits filed with her ITN be carried/merge/link with her new SIN automatically? Or when I file her 2013 Tax year with her new SIN, I can just fill in carry-over amounts from her old ITN, and provide proofs?

Thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to share any experiences/information/resources. :)

Anyone with similar experience? :)

Call the CRA and speak with an agent on the phone.

The CRA is supposed to automatically link the two numbers once they receive the new SIN info from Service Canada.

You can call the CRA to confirm, but don't call until about 2 weeks after getting the new SIN otherwise they may not be able to see the new SIN in the system.

seton is right. You do not have to do anything else, other than to confirm with CRA that they have the new number. Other than that, provide new SIN to your employer and perhaps your bank(if necessary).
