Hi there,

I was hoping someone could answer this question for me:

So I sent off my sponsorship app (for my husband) today and was looking over some info online. We are currently living in TURKEY (until his papers are processed- its going to be LONG). He lived in Canada for almost 10 years but we just got police clearances for TURKEY as we heard someone that IMMIGRATION would conduct the RCMP background check themselves----IS THIS CORRECT? or were we supposed to get an RCMP background check ourselves and send it on with the application I mailed today?

HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

An immigration attorney showed me in the book by CIC that if you lived in a country for longer than 6 months you are supposed to get clearances from them too. I hope that helps. I would just have it done and sent to them to be on the safe side.

While that 6 month rule is generally true, an RCMP certificate is only required in certain cases and is done so upon request from the immigration officer. Basically what I mean is that your application is technically not incomplete but there is a good chance you will get asked for one. For people that have lived in Canada the immigration office is able to do a check on your name by themselves. If something comes up when they run your name through the system OR they just want to make your life more difficult because you are from a country where they are supposed to do that, then they will ask for one. It won't hurt to get the process started now so you have it ready in the event you are asked for one.

Maybe some senior members can correct me if I am wrong but I am in a similar situation and this is what my research has led me to understand.

It is required for every country you've lived in for 6 months except for Canada. They will conduct it themselves through a name check if a hit is detected (similar name eg) they would ask you to submit one.

Anybody got a clue how long this RCMP security check takes when requested by CHC's? Its all i'm waiting on currently, assuming that im just waiting on one last Background check.

Rob a girl that went to an interveiw in Buffalo had her RCMP check done in one hour. They said at first it would take 3-5 days but then it took 1 hour. Not sure how long it takes for London to get back the info once requested ::)

CHC/CIC has direct online access to CPIC. They do their own criminal records checks.
