Hi there

I am pretty confused as to what are the job prospects for Pakistani Chartered Accountants in canada. Do they get good jobs? I did try to create a thread but i think not many are on this forum....If anyone has some info pls share even if it is not you but may b u know the experience of someone

depends on your experience, but normally not in quality organizations. Pakistani CA get low level accounting jobs. Canadian don't bother american CPA as well and Pakistani CA is not fully recognized out side Pak and some ME countries . you have to appear in exams in Canadian provincial CA (because Pakistani CA authority and Canadian CA authority doesn't have reciprocal agreements in place) and then bet you wil find a good very good job. (I have started my Canadian CA process)

Hi Can you please tell me what exactly do I have to study (How many papers & Do I have to register with any institute) in Canada after my ACCA from UK, please ?

I am interested in settling down in Vancouver, if that helps you answer more specifically !!

Thanks,

If you are ACCA then you don't have to worry because ACCA has reciprocal membership with CGA and you will have to appear in two exams only. They are online and open book too.
If you wish you may go for Canadian CA but in Canada you will not find such discrimination between CGA and CA as we find between ICAP and ACCA in Pakistan.

^^^ Well I don't agree with the point CA is much superior than CGA. I know people in Deloitte, KPMG and PwC working as Senior Manager or director and met people from TD, pepsico, CIBC, Magna, Ontario hydro and several other top firms during university info sessions. These all recruiters clearly said they may hesitate to recruit a CGA over CMA because CGA's are not as competent as their counter parts. On basis of CGA you may get job but just a small phrase googling can tell you CA>>CMA>>CGA. CMA/CGA jobs CMA prueferred. I can point out clear words of a Deloitte senior manager regarding CGA when I asked him what path I should follow (this guy works in Deloitte, Toronto office and I met the people he mentioned, I am going to york to take courses I need for CMA. I would like to be in top driving seat of a prestigious firm in future, so utilizing my time now fully ::-))

As for the designation, CA should obviously be your first choice not comparable to CMA or CGA, but CGA and CMA are easy qualifications and those who get low grades in school go for these as they are unable to make in to professional services. If you are willing to, I can talk to a couple Pakistani CAs with their own firms to see if they can get you some experience??? If not CA, then you should do CMA. CMAs are very common now in US, UK and India so its prestige is increasing. CGA is useless and made fun of in the industry ... every time we meet accountant or analyst at a client who is -- mootay damagh ka -- we say to each other that he must be a CGA and 9 times out of 10 it turns out to be correct. I will some time back firms recruited CGA's but now they are becoming bit reluctant. I can arrange meeting for you with people who left CGA for CMA. so choice shoule be CA > CMA. Don't bother for CGA, if you want to work in professional services or prestigious firms in Canadian financial industry. CGA waste of time and money

Decisions is your easy way CGA or little work CMA a better qualification.

Well the reason for what you said might be that people who are CA have taken the top seats since long time and CGA is comparatively a new qualification and that is why they have the feelings that they are superior. Besides that CGA's are also gaining the senior level jobs and giving CA a good competition that is why CA's are more biased.
In addition CGA's are also allowed to have public practice license just like CA's are. One has to figure it out himself that where he wants to go and what type of career he wants to choose. Personally i would not go with the comments of senior deloitte official because as i said he might be biased.

A CA designation if you love auditing and taxation and want to stay in public practice or open your own public practice.

A CGA designation if you don't care much about auditing and would like to work in industry or put simply, stay away from public practice. However, keep in mind that you can also get public practice license as CGA.

A CMA designation if you absolutely love cost or management accounting.

Any exemptions for ACCA if one decides to go for CMA ??

Also how many papers and how long will it take (Duration) , please ?

Yes there are exemptions available and you have to send your credentials for assessment and they assess it case by case. CMA does it for free while CGA charges for it.

CA is not always for people who always want to stay in auditing. 84% of CA work in industry or financial services after they complete required auditing hours. My friend is not a CA, CA's are more likely to become CFO or CEO not CGA. Plus I am financial advisory and performance management guy so for me CA is much more attractive than CGA. I like Capital market, financial advisory, S&O and CP consulting, I met lots of people at school during info sessions never found CGA so I might be biased 8)

Considering your interest in financial advisory wouldn't it be more feasible to go for CFA?

I am CFA level II Candidate 8), but CFA doesn't help much, Toronto has the highest number of CFA's in the world. Need to be more competitive.

wow CFA + CA would be a killer combination ;)
I am guessing from your posts that you are already in Canada and as you said in one of your posts that you have done MA from York uni as well so was it MA in accountancy?
