Hi everyone,

I'm in the middle of applying for Canadian study permit application, however, need to make sure I include every expected bit of information and documents in my application. Some the queries I have are following -

Socio-economic or family ties in Canada and in country of residence -

In order to prove the visa officer that I would return to my country of residence upon completion of authorized stay in Canada, I plan to show the following -

Social ties -
A letter from an NGO stating I've been actively assisting them and they expect me to contribute further upon return to home country.
A letter from my previous university professor stating how Canadian education is essential for my further growth.

Family ties -
An affidavit from my mother listing out all of our extended family and that she would expect me to be by her side in her old age.

Economic ties -
I plan to take education loan from a nationalize bank in my country of residence, I plan to mention it as a financial obligation on me and I am going to be stating about it in my SOP.
I also have medical insurance and a provident fund account with my current employer, not sure if that could be added to provide more weightage to my application?

Language ability -

I plan to apply under Non-SDS category. I have received an unconditional offer from a Canadian university without having to provide IELTS. They have additionally issued me a letter stating the following -

The student has met the English requirement for admission since the student’s undergraduate study was instructed in English and is not required to provide further proof of
English proficiency.

I completed my Bachelors degree in English from a renowned university in India, also did my highschool studies in English where I scored 70+ in English language. I plan to mention about stating in my SOP that I took the following additional elective courses in my undergrad studies where I excelled -

Score in English Subject in 10th grade - 72/100
Score in English Subject in 12th grade - 74/100
Communication Skills - 9/10
Business Communication and Ethics - 10/10

Financial Plan-

My course tuition fee is 7,25,000 INR for two years. So in order to show one year tuition fee + 1 year living expenses + Travel expenses I have following to show-

Savings of 6,00,000 INR with source being my salary of working in past 2 and half year. (I plan to attach Salary slip, bank statements, and Form 16)
Education Loan amounting 7,50,000 INR (I plan to share loan sanction letter)
Funding/Financial support from University of amount 9,50,000 (or CAD 17,000 mentioned in letter of acceptance).

I think the above mentioned finances should be sufficient to cover the cost of education, right?

Last but not the least I plan to address the following in my SOP -

• Purpose of visit. (Would be covered in SOP)
• Immigration status in country of residence. (Would be covered in SOP)
• Length of your proposed study. (Would be covered in SOP)
• Past employment and academic history (Would be covered in SOP)
• Socio-economic or family ties in Canada and in country of residence. (as mentioned above)
• language ability (as mentioned above)
• Financial abilities - Personal assets and financial status/income. (as mentioned above)
• Level of personal establishment. (I received an award from COO of my current organization, which is one of biggest MNC in my country, or should I remove this part?)
• Travel history (the reasons for not being able to Travel abroad).
• Current employment situation (That I plan to resign before travelling to Canada for further studies, or should I just remove this part?
• Employment prospects in country of residence. (Would be covered in SOP)
• Considering the availability of similar programs of study in in your country of residence. (Would be covered in SOP)
• Future prospects and plans (Would be covered in SOP)

My profile -
  • 2 Years and 6 months of experience in Cyber security
  • 4 Years BEng in Computer Engineering - 7.34/10 (Highest CGPA being 9/10 and was consistent among top 5% students in the class of 60+ students for the last 3 years)
  • 12th from Maharashtra State Board - 54%
  • IT Course from Maharashtra Technical Board - 90%
  • 10th from Maharashtra State Board - 74%

Course applied - 2 Years MEng in Computer Engineering (Thesis/Research focused on Cyber Security) from a renowned university in Canada.

It's good, I think you'll get it

Thanks mate for that sense of positivity. I've been worried about the "home-ties" part, especially because I or my parent/guardian do not own any property in my home country. I researched online and came across the above mentioned documents which I could supply in my study permit file and possible hope for best.

Also, not going via the usual way of proving English proficiency (via IELTS) is something that got me concerned.

Would there be any specific things that I need to be careful about or improve on, in order to make my application successful in first attempt?

Your application seems strong, however, I think VOs have regulations that tell them to assess most types of TRV applications under the premise that their owners will be staying in Canada permanently rather than temporarily. They likely have statistics spanning over several years that show most international students from certain countries that study in Canada never return to their original countries upon the completion of their studies. They are aware that most international students already have the intention to apply for PGWP then PR then citizenship before coming to Canada regardless of how hard they try to explain that they are not staying, even if they prove a 100 ties to their home countries.

Indubitably, chances of acceptance are largely dependent on your country rather than the strength of your application or case. Third world countries have the lowest chances while first world countries have the highest. However, it is highly possible that they favor some third world countries over other third world countries as they likely also have statistics for how "useful" students from X third world country have been since they settled in the country.

I'm not a Canada immigration expert, but these were my thoughts on the criteria upon which Canada grants TRVs, take them with a grain of salt as they are just based on an educated guess.

Good luck!

Thanks mate, for sharing your opinions/thoughts. I agree with you on the chances of getting the TRV for third world vs second/first world countries. I also assume they assume India and some of other countries under the SDS (must be reason they opened that stream)?

Considering that I'm an Indian descent, do you think my application would require any further improvements?

I would say, try to state your plans in your home country having obtained academic credentials from a Canadian DLI. In other words, tell them what you expect from your Canadian degree in India and what you'd do with it.

Yes, I indeed plan to showcase in my SOP stating the following -

Employment prospects in country of residence.
And how it will help me with create more opportunities to local communities.
