Hey guys,

Good morning, evening, afternoon~

I am admitted to the University of Toronto in the MEng program, a MEng full-time extended option with 2 years of studying period.
As you know, normally this MEng full-time program only requires 1 year to finish, however applicants can apply for an extended option to spread their workload to 2 years. So this is my current MEng program, requiring 2 years to finish.

So my question comes, is this 2 year extended option MEng program equivalent to a 2 year MASc program when it comes to applying for a 3 years working visa after graduation? Am I qualified to obtain a 3-year working visa after I graduate from this program? Does anyone here have the similar experience or do you have any friends who had experienced the same situations and had successfully got a 3 years working visa?

Thank you guys... ;D

If you are stretching a one year program into 2 (with same course credits), that doesn't mean you will get a 3 year work permit.

Hi thank you for the reply. Are you 100% sure about this or do you know anyone who have ever failed to get a 3 year work permit in this situation? Thank you so much.

You need to be a full time student for the duration of your studies. If stretching your courses means you go part time - then you won't even qualify for a 1 year PGWP (never mind a 3 year PGWP).

Hi Scylla, thank you for your reply. Please see this picture from the uToronto SGS website describing the extended option of MEng:

MEng students can enrol on a full-time, extended full-time, or part-time basis, with or without a project.

Full-time students are able to complete the program in one year or three sessions and may take up to five half-courses per session. The time limit for degree completion is three years. Full-time students cannot transfer into the extended full-time option once registered. If your studies go beyond the first year – then you will have to pay additional program fees.

Extended full-time students complete the program over a two-year period and may take up to three half-courses per session but no more than six half-courses per year. The time limit for degree completion is three years. Students cannot transfer out of the extended full-time option once registered.

What is the difference between Full-time and Extended Full-time? The difference between Full-Time and Extended Full-time is primarily the time it takes to complete the program. With Full-Time option, students complete the program in 1 year and Extended Full-Time option, students complete the program within 2 years (by spreading out the courses over 2 years).

Part-time students take more than two years to complete the program and are limited to two half courses per session or four courses per year. The time limit for degree completion is six years. Part-time students cannot transfer into the extended full-time option once registered.

So this extended option of MEng is still a full-time study rather than part-time. In this way am I qualified to acquire a 3 year PGWP?
Thanks ???

1. No, you aren't.
2. If that's the case, then all international students will simply 'extend' 1 year course into 2 to get a 3 years work permit.

Hi,

If you are stretching a one year program into 2 (with same course credits), that doesn't mean you will get a 3 year work permit.

what would happen if anyone complete 2 yrs M.Eng course in 1 year(3 sem) or 4 semester?? In some universities the program is 2 yrs.

Can someone please clarify the visa duration issue. I can assure everyone that the extended full time is not a part time degree and is only provided by the University of Toronto which means that students can enroll in a 1 year masters or a 2 year masters which is the extended version. It is not the same as the 1 year program as the fees you will pay will be for 2 years on an yearly basis and completely different from the 1 year program fees. So if we pay the fees for 2 years as a full time student, wouldn't we be eligible for the 3 year work permit? Can someone please give an authentic response. Thanks.
