Hello,

I'm doing my MS in Canada and would like my mom to come visit me for 3 months.

1) Should I select "TOURISM" under "Purpose of Visit" or choose "OTHER" and state "VISIT TO SON"?

2) Also, should she request a "SINGLE-ENTRY" or "MULTIPLE-ENTRY" visa??

3) Finally, what is a good amount to fill in "FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR MY STAY"?

Thank you very much! :) :) :)

Depends on what she is planning to do, if she would like to leave the country while here, then multiple.

At least 6K CAN but I would suggest to show 10K just to make sure.

BTW, has she travelled a lot for long periods of time? If not then 3 months will likely be denied. For first trips it is a good idea to stay under 3 weeks.

Also I would suggest to come up with a good reason for her to stay such a long time. "Loitering" doesn't sound good in an application (yes just "visiting" would be considered loitering).

Are you 100% sure?

She has stayed in US for 1-1.5 months twice before.

3 weeks is miserably less considering she is spending so much and is going to stay at my apt which cuts down her expenses.

I wanted her to stay with me for the entire semester (Sep-Dec) so we could return back home together in December.

Atleast 2 months at a minimum.

Can you suggest something please?

The thing is that as a student you are allowed to bring immediate family (spouse and kids), but parents are not considered immediate family. Canada wouldn't allow so many international students if that meant they are going to bring their parents, along.... so there is a potential issue.

It seems like your mother has done some travelling so worth a shot.

Be as precise and clear on why is your mother staying so much time, as I said CIC doesn't like people just "loitering" around.... at least find something for her to do so that 2-3 months sound feasable.

Do you think it's better to keep it 1.5 months ON THE APPLICATION instead? And once she gets the 3 or 6 month visa (which is the standard time I heard), she can book the return ticket for whatever date she wants for upto even 6 months.

It is better to put less than more. The three to six months comes once she enters the country. It is decided by the CBSA agent she talks to. Once in Canada she could apply for more time if not given as much as you want before it expires. She would have implied status until she gets her renewal or denial.

Just get a changeable ticket for her when she gets her visa.

Oh, can you explain how it works? I thought when she gets the visa from the Embassy, they give the permitted amount of time too?

If the CBSA decides on the permitted time, does she have to ask for the same amount of time as that on her application?

The visa issued by the embassy which has dates attached to it the visa will expire after the date given. As long as she enters the country by that date she will be allowed to come to Canada. When she talked to the CBSA agent upon arrival he will see the valid visa and then after talking to your mother decide how long she can stay by her story. They can say an amount of time if it is enough she goes back at the end, if not she can apply for a visa extension.
